micro1 3D Modeler Interview: Clean Topology, UV Unwrapping and Normal Map Baking

Interview prep · Today

How to prepare for the micro1 3D Modeler interview with Zara: topology for real-time assets, UV unwrapping and seam problems, baking high-poly detail, trim sheets and texel density. What a strong spoken answer covers in each area, the thin answers to avoid, and what 3D work is listed on Labeling Jobs.

The micro1 3D Modeler interview is mostly about production habits: whether your meshes, UVs and texture work would survive a game engine and a team of other artists. This guide prepares you for micro1's AI interview with Zara for the 3D Modeler role; Labeling Jobs is not affiliated with micro1. micro1 publishes its own list of common 3D modeler interview questions, and topology, UV unwrapping and texel density show up across most of it.

Every micro1 interview is a spoken conversation with Zara, micro1's AI interviewer. How it runs, what proctoring involves and what happens afterwards are in our Zara interview guide, and you can rehearse with micro1's mock interview tool.

Clean topology and real-time poly budgets

Expect to be asked how you build meshes that deform well and stay light. A strong answer covers quad-based edge flow around joints and silhouettes, supporting loops on hard-surface models, removing edges that add no shape, and setting a triangle budget per asset before you start. Mention LODs and checking shading in the target engine after triangulation. The weak answer stops at "I keep it all quads".

UV unwrapping, stretching and seams

This theme checks whether you can unwrap awkward organic and mechanical shapes and then fix what goes wrong. Talk about placing seams where they will be hidden or follow natural breaks, using a checker texture to spot stretching, relaxing islands, straightening hard-surface shells so texture pixels line up, and leaving enough padding to stop bleeding at lower mip levels. Have one asset ready where a seam forced a re-cut. Saying you rely on auto-unwrap and move on will cost you.

Normal map baking, trim sheets and tiling textures

Zara will probably ask how you carry high-poly detail onto a low-poly game mesh. Cover cage or ray distance settings, matching names for exploded bakes, and hard edges split at UV seams so the normal map does not fight the shading. For environment work, explain when a tiling texture or a trim sheet saves more texture memory than a unique bake, and how you lay out a trim sheet so other artists can use it. A list of software names without the reasoning is thin.

Texel density and asset consistency across a team

The last area is pipeline discipline. Explain picking one texel density per asset class, checking it with a tool or script, and keeping naming, pivot, scale and export settings in a shared standard. If asked how you would choose software for a studio pipeline, talk about file interchange, licensing and what the team already knows. Personal preference alone is a weak reason.

3D work currently listed on Labeling Jobs

Only one listing on Labeling Jobs has 3D in the title right now: a micro1 3D Animator / CGI Artist role at $15 to $80 an hour. It is AI training work that draws on 3D skills, not a modelling seat at a studio. New creative roles appear under video, image and design. Figures checked on 4 October 2026.
