micro1

micro1 is a data lab that pays domain experts to train and evaluate frontier AI models: engineering, law, medicine, finance, linguistics and more. Work is fully remote, entry is through an AI interview with its own interviewer Zara, and micro1 publishes the twenty countries it cannot hire from.

How micro1 works

micro1 describes itself as a data lab building "the infrastructure for advancing intelligence through expert human data, real-world training environments, and contextual evaluations". Its work for AI labs runs through three named product lines: Realm, which builds reinforcement-learning environments and frontier evaluations; Cortex, which evaluates AI agents running in production; and a robotics arm collecting expert-demonstrated data.

For an expert, that resolves into project work. You certify a skill on micro1's platform or apply to an open opportunity, and once certified you become eligible for projects that match your verified skills. Certifying more skills widens the range of projects you can be put forward for.

Getting in: the Zara interview

micro1 publishes four steps: apply for an opportunity, take the AI interview, get onboarded, start earning.

The interview is run by Zara, micro1's own LLM-based interviewer, which it has published research on. micro1 no longer publishes a single length for it: its free practice interviews are labeled 18 minutes, and its knowledge base describes interviews built from skill modules of about 5 minutes each, with optional exercises such as a coding task of up to 25 minutes. Our micro1 interview questions guide covers what it asks. A reviewer quoted on micro1's own site describes Zara as "direct, professional, and felt like chatting with a real expert". Treat that as a testimonial micro1 chose to publish, not an independent verdict.

Anyone who has looked at Alignerr may recognise the name: Alignerr's onboarding also names a "Zara™ interview". Neither company states a relationship, but the trademark and the format point to the same product, so preparation is likely to carry across.

micro1 is unusually direct that getting certified is not the same as getting work: "Certification does not guarantee immediate placement." Its own advice for the wait (keep your profile current, certify more skills) tells you the gap between certification and a first project is a normal experience rather than a fault.

Is micro1 legit?

Yes: micro1 is a real, venture-backed company with named founders and investors, not a front for harvesting applications. It was founded by Ali Ansari, who studied computer science at UC Berkeley, and it started as an AI recruiting platform; Yahoo Finance reported a $30 million valuation for it in October 2023. In September 2025 TechCrunch reported a $35 million Series A at a $500 million valuation, led by 01 Advisors (the firm of former Twitter executives Dick Costolo and Adam Bain), and described micro1 as a three-year-old startup; micro1 announced the same round on its own site. In September 2026 Forbes reported a further raise of more than $100 million at a $4 billion valuation. Press coverage places the company variously in Los Angeles, Palo Alto and San Francisco, and the micro1 pages we read do not state a headquarters, so we leave that open.

It also publishes about its own methods. The Zara research mentioned above is a paper on arXiv, first submitted in April 2025 by Nima Yazdani, Aruj Mahajan and Ali Ansari, which describes Zara as a GPT-4o-based system for running practice interviews, assessments and candidate feedback. That is micro1 writing about its own product, not an independent audit, but it is more than most platforms in this market put on the record.

The caveats concern the process. On micro1's Trustpilot page (rated 4.7 from more than 10,000 reviews when we checked), most of the praise we read is about the Zara interview itself rather than paid work, and the critical reviews describe technical glitches, interrupted interviews and feeling rushed. A widely shared 2025 LinkedIn post called micro1 a scam, arguing its video interviews serve AI training rather than hiring; commenters on that post were split, with some reporting they had been paid. We could not verify that claim either way, and in our searches we found no lawsuit or regulatory action against micro1 as of 25 September 2026. Certification does not guarantee work, as covered above. For the general checks that separate a real platform from an imitation, see our guide to spotting fake AI training jobs.

Who can apply

micro1 says it hires globally and then publishes the exceptions, which is more than most platforms in this market do. It states it cannot hire residents of Afghanistan, Belarus, China, Cuba, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Hong Kong, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Macao, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, Venezuela or Yemen, citing legal, regulatory and security requirements.

Domains run wider than the usual coding-and-STEM pairing: engineering, finance, healthcare and medicine, legal, economics, linguistics and cinematography among them, and micro1 says it takes people from early-career professionals through to PhDs and industry leaders.

There is also a strand that needs no professional credential at all. micro1 pays people to record short first-person videos of ordinary tasks (preparing meals, folding laundry, organising a room, using basic tools) as training data for robotics models. It describes that programme as open to everyone, globally, with payment for approved recordings.

What it pays

micro1 publishes no rate card and no rate ranges on its public pages, so the pay fields here are empty rather than guessed. Its own expert reviews describe agreeing an hourly rate and working at it from the start, which suggests rates are set per engagement rather than per platform.

Earnings land in a micro1 account wallet, which you withdraw from using your own preferred payment method. On payout timing, micro1 commits to one figure publicly: the robotics recording work pays on a biweekly basis. It does not publish a cadence for hourly project work, so read biweekly as the one schedule micro1 has stated rather than a platform-wide guarantee.

The referral programme

micro1 runs an open referral scheme, unusual in this market, paying up to $3,000 for a successful placement, and you do not need to be a micro1 expert, or connected to micro1 at all, to use it. Payouts are flat amounts fixed per job and shown on the listing before you refer anyone, and they are released once your referred candidate has completed ten hours of work, or the equivalent on pay-per-task projects. A candidate who applied before clicking a referral link cannot be attributed retroactively.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Publishes its excluded-country list outright, so eligibility takes seconds to check rather than surfacing after onboarding
  • Domain range is genuinely broad: law, medicine, finance, linguistics and cinematography alongside engineering
  • Fully remote and flexible, with both hourly project work and pay-per-task projects
  • One route in needs no professional credential at all: the everyday-task recording work for robotics
  • micro1 states that human recruiters review profiles alongside the automated assessment
  • An open referral programme worth up to $3,000 that anyone can use

Less good:

  • No pay rates published anywhere public: you find out the number at the offer
  • Certification does not guarantee work, and micro1 says so itself
  • The AI interview, plus any exercise attached to it, is unpaid time spent before you know what the work pays
  • Payout cadence is published only for the robotics recording strand
  • The exclusion list is broad and includes Ukraine, Hong Kong and Macao alongside the sanctioned states, which catches people out

About this page

Written from micro1's own expert-facing pages (the experts page and its FAQ, the everyday-tasks page, and the referral programme), last checked on 6 September 2026. The "Is micro1 legit?" section draws instead on press coverage (TechCrunch, Yahoo Finance and Forbes), micro1's own Series A announcement, the Zara paper on arXiv, micro1's Trustpilot page and a public LinkedIn post, and those facts were last checked 25 September 2026. On 25 September 2026 we also replaced the interview length: this page previously gave 20 to 40 minutes, a figure micro1 has since removed from its experts FAQ, and the description now comes from micro1's interview prep page and knowledge base. We are not affiliated with micro1 and we do not process applications.

Two things we have deliberately left open. The pay fields are empty because micro1 publishes no rate. Country eligibility is open because micro1 publishes an exclusion list rather than an inclusion list, and this page can only express the latter, so "worldwide" here means worldwide except the twenty countries named above. That list is quoted from micro1's FAQ as it stood on the date above and can change, so check it against the source before you apply.
