AI tutor jobs: what xAI's AI Tutor roles pay, and where else the work is
Overview · 1 week ago
xAI is the one large employer that hires under the title AI Tutor: 32 open roles on 3 October 2026, mostly language audio work at $35–45 an hour in the US, with specialist roles up to $100. This guide covers the roles and terms, the 2025 layoff of generalist tutors, and the same work at other platforms under other names.
Two jobs share the name
"AI tutor" means two different things in job searches. In AI training, an AI tutor is a person who teaches a model: labelling data, recording audio, correcting answers and grading output so the model improves. xAI, the company behind the Grok chatbot, uses it as an actual job title. In education, an AI tutor is a piece of software that tutors students, such as Khan Academy's Khanmigo, and the jobs around it are ordinary teaching or edtech roles.
This guide is about the first kind. If you want to tutor students, look at tutoring and teaching jobs instead; the section near the end explains where the two overlap.
xAI's AI Tutor roles
xAI is the only large employer we found that uses "AI Tutor" as a title. On 3 October 2026 its careers board on Greenhouse listed 32 AI Tutor roles out of 301 open jobs. The postings now carry the name SpaceXAI, after SpaceX announced in February 2026 that it would acquire xAI.
Twenty-five of the 32 are language roles: Arabic, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese, Croatian, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Hausa, Igbo, Indonesian, Italian, Khmer, Malay, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Sinhala, Sorani Kurdish, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Ukrainian and Yoruba. The other seven are domain roles. Pay is published for US-based candidates only:
| Role | US pay range |
|---|---|
| Language roles (all 25) | $35–45/hour |
| Writing, Design, Humanities | $35–75/hour |
| Video, Video (Weekend) | $40–75/hour |
| Software Engineering | $40–100/hour |
| Legal & Compliance | $50–100/hour |
For anyone outside the US, every posting says the same thing: "Information will be provided to you during the recruitment process." Expect a different rate, and ask for it before you invest time in the tests.
The terms are identical across the postings. Roles "may be offered as full-time, part-time, or contractor positions." For contractors there is no fixed commitment, although xAI says most projects need at least 10 hours a week, and you set your own hours. The work is remote "from any location worldwide, subject to legal eligibility, time-zone compatibility, and role-specific needs." xAI cannot hire in Wyoming or Illinois, does not sponsor visas, and requires a Chromebook, a Mac on macOS 11 or later, or a Windows 10 or later machine if you use your own computer. Eligible US positions get health insurance, a 401(k) plan and paid sick leave.
What the language tutors do
The language roles are audio work for Grok's voice features. The Spanish posting describes using xAI's own software to label, annotate and record "multilingual audio clips, voice recordings, speech samples", with attention to intonation, rhythm and accent. The basic requirements are native proficiency in the language, English at B2 level or above with "clear, natural vocal delivery and pronunciation suitable for audio recording", and the ability to transcribe accurately across accents and poor audio.
At $35–45 an hour in the US, these are the most accessible AI Tutor roles. No degree is listed; the qualification is the language itself.
The specialist roles set a high bar
The domain roles ask for proof of professional standing rather than general ability. The Writing posting asks applicants to provide "verifiable proof" of qualifications for a chosen specialty. For creative fiction that means at least two of a list that includes novel deals with major publishers, more than 50,000 copies sold, ten or more short stories in major outlets, or finalist status for awards such as the Hugo or Nebula. The Software Engineering posting asks for professional experience building scalable applications and deep expertise in at least one language; the work is curating code examples and correcting AI-generated code.
With that kind of record, the specialist roles pay up to about twice the language rate. Without it, the language roles or other platforms are a better use of your time.
What happened to the generalist tutors
xAI used to hire AI tutors in bulk without asking for a specialism. In February 2025 Business Insider reported that it employed more than 900 tutors and planned to hire thousands more, in temporary full-time roles at $35–65 an hour with no degree required.
That changed in September 2025. TechCrunch reported that xAI laid off about 500 people from its data annotation team, which had around 1,500 members. An internal email quoted in the reporting said xAI "no longer need[s] most generalist AI tutor positions" and would expand its specialist tutors, in areas such as STEM, finance, medicine and safety, tenfold. Laid-off workers were paid until the end of their contracts or 30 November 2025, but lost system access the same day.
In June 2026 Bloomberg reported that xAI had paused hiring specialists to train Grok. Many of the postings listed above were first published in August and September 2026, but a live posting is not proof of active hiring, and we found no report confirming that the pause has ended.
So the general AI tutor job that xAI filled by the thousand in early 2025 is gone. The open roles are language audio work and specialist work that needs credentials.
The same work under other names
No other major AI training platform we checked uses "AI tutor" as a job title. On 3 October 2026 there was none among the open roles at Scale AI, Mercor, Handshake, Prolific, Turing, Invisible or Labelbox. The work is the same; the label differs:
- Outlier, run by Scale AI, calls the role "AI Trainer". See how Outlier pays.
- DataAnnotation sorts work into tracks (general, multilingual, coding, STEM and professional) and screens everyone with one Starter Assessment.
- Handshake AI calls its contributors "fellows". Its chief executive, Garrett Lord, described the work to TIME in 2026 as being "a part-time AI tutor". See the Handshake AI fellowship.
- Mercor and micro1 use "Expert" and specialist titles, and the closest thing to an AI tutor job on this board comes from them.
Some of those roles involve real tutoring. Mercor's Spanish Tutors role pays $60–65 an hour to experienced Spanish teachers who lead recorded one-on-one lessons with English-speaking learners, so a language-learning platform can capture genuine tutoring conversations. It asks for a degree and three years of teaching, and runs about seven hours a week for roughly three weeks. The learners on the other side are paid too, through the Spanish Learner listing at $30–37. micro1's Educator / Assessor Writer role pays $90–140 an hour to teachers and examiners who mark AI-written responses against a rubric, the way they would mark student work. Mercor has also run an exam-prep listing that paid $40 an hour to SAT, GMAT and MCAT tutors to improve AI tutoring models; it has since closed.

If you meant tutoring students with AI
Khanmigo, which Khan Academy describes as its "AI-powered teaching assistant & tutor", is a product that students and teachers use. Searches for "AI tutor jobs" sometimes come from teachers who want to use these tools, or from people who want to tutor students online. Neither is AI training work. The overlap is the kind of listing above: experienced tutors paid to record or grade lessons so the software tutors improve.
Before you apply
- Check where the pay applies. xAI's ranges are for US-based candidates only, and it gives everyone else their rate during recruitment.
- Find out the employment type. xAI offers full-time, part-time and contractor positions under the same title, and benefits apply only to eligible US employees.
- Treat a live posting with some caution, given the 2025 layoff and the 2026 hiring pause.
- Apply to more than one platform. Titles differ, but an "AI Trainer" at Outlier or a language expert at Mercor is doing similar work; see applying to several platforms at once.

Questions
- What is an AI tutor job?
- In AI training, an AI tutor teaches a model rather than a person: labelling data, recording audio, correcting answers and grading output so the model improves. xAI, the company behind Grok, uses AI Tutor as a job title. Other platforms call the same kind of work AI trainer, expert or fellow.
- How much does xAI pay AI tutors?
- xAI publishes pay for US-based candidates only. On 3 October 2026 its 25 language AI Tutor roles paid $35–45 an hour, Writing, Design and Humanities $35–75, Video $40–75, Software Engineering $40–100 and Legal & Compliance $50–100. International candidates are told their pay during recruitment.
- Can I work as an xAI AI tutor outside the US?
- The postings say the work can be done remotely from any location worldwide, subject to legal eligibility, time-zone compatibility and role needs. xAI does not sponsor visas, cannot hire in Wyoming or Illinois, and does not publish pay for candidates outside the US.
- Do other companies hire AI tutors?
- Not under that title. On 3 October 2026 none of Scale AI, Mercor, Handshake, Prolific, Turing, Invisible or Labelbox had an AI tutor job title open. Outlier calls the role AI Trainer, Handshake AI calls contributors fellows, and Mercor and micro1 use expert titles; some of their roles, such as Mercor's Spanish Tutors at $60–65 an hour, involve real tutoring.
- Did xAI lay off its AI tutors?
- In September 2025 TechCrunch reported that xAI laid off about 500 people from its data annotation team and said it no longer needed most generalist AI tutor positions, while planning to grow its specialist tutor team tenfold. In June 2026 Bloomberg reported a pause in specialist hiring.
