micro1 AML Advisor Interview: Risk Scoring, Transaction Monitoring and Due Diligence

Interview prep · Today

What the micro1 AML Advisor interview with Zara probes: regulatory frameworks such as the BSA and FATF, institution-wide risk assessment, transaction monitoring analytics, customer due diligence for high-risk clients and audit readiness. How to answer each out loud, and what AML work is listed on Labeling Jobs.

The micro1 AML Advisor interview spends most of its time on two things: whether you know the regulatory frameworks by name, and whether you can turn them into a risk assessment and monitoring program that would survive an examiner. This page prepares you for micro1's AI interview with Zara for the AML Advisor role. Labeling Jobs is not affiliated with micro1. micro1 publishes its own list of AML Advisor interview questions; what follows groups those topics into four areas and explains what a good spoken answer sounds like.

Every micro1 interview is a spoken conversation with Zara, micro1's AI interviewer. How it runs, what proctoring involves and what happens afterwards are in our Zara interview guide, and you can rehearse with micro1's mock interview tool.

Regulatory frameworks and keeping up with change

Expect to be asked which rules govern your work. A US-focused candidate should name the Bank Secrecy Act and the USA PATRIOT Act, then the FATF recommendations, and the EU AML directives if you have worked under them. Naming them is the easy half. The interviewer wants the mechanism that follows a regulatory update: someone tracks it, policies and procedures get revised, staff training changes, and you talk to the compliance officer or regulator when interpretation is unclear. "I stay informed" with nothing behind it is the weak version.

AML risk assessment and risk scoring

An institution-wide risk assessment looks at products, services, customer types, geographies and channels, rates inherent risk, then judges how well controls reduce it. Describe the tools you would actually use: a risk scoring matrix, a heat map for the board pack, scenario analysis where the business is complicated. Also say what you do when the assessment turns up a discrepancy, such as a customer rated low who transacts like a high-risk one. Document it, find the root cause (often onboarding data), escalate if it is material and fix the process. Candidates who stop at "we rate everything high, medium or low" sound junior.

Transaction monitoring and data analytics

This is where suspicious activity detection comes in. Talk about rule-based scenarios, threshold tuning, trend and peer-group analysis, and where machine learning helps cut false positives. A concrete example works well: a structuring pattern you caught, or a rule you retuned because it produced thousands of alerts and no cases.

Customer due diligence, reporting and audit readiness

For high-risk clients, explain the step up from CDD to enhanced due diligence: source of funds and wealth, beneficial ownership, senior sign-off, shorter review cycles. Good AML analytical reporting means documented investigations, findings that follow from the evidence and recommendations someone can act on. For audit readiness, mention current documentation, internal testing, mock reviews and findings closed on time.
