micro1 Cloud Engineer Interview: High Availability, Infrastructure as Code and Containers

Interview prep · Today

The micro1 cloud engineer interview with Zara covers scalable cloud architecture, Infrastructure as Code, container orchestration and security, and the serverless versus containers decision. What a strong spoken answer includes, the weak answers to avoid, the coding challenge, and what cloud work on Labeling Jobs pays.

Most of the micro1 cloud engineer interview questions ask you to justify an architecture choice, so the interview rewards trade-off thinking more than memorised service names. This page is for candidates preparing for micro1's AI interview with Zara for the Cloud Engineer role; Labeling Jobs is not affiliated with micro1. micro1 publishes a list of cloud engineer interview questions, and containers and Infrastructure as Code each take up several of them.

Every micro1 interview is a spoken conversation with Zara, micro1's AI interviewer. How it runs, what proctoring involves and what happens afterwards are in our Zara interview guide, and you can rehearse with micro1's mock interview tool.

Scalable cloud architecture and high availability

The interviewer is listening for the design levers you reach for first. Stateless services behind a load balancer, autoscaling groups, managed databases with read replicas, caching, and queues to absorb spikes are a good base. For high availability and disaster recovery, separate the two: multi-AZ deployment handles a zone failure, while DR means backups, cross-region replication and a tested recovery plan with stated RTO and RPO. A weak answer says the cloud scales automatically and stops there.

Infrastructure as Code and automated deployments

Expect a question on why IaC matters and another comparing tools. Talk about repeatable environments, code review on infrastructure changes, drift detection and easy rollback. Compare Terraform (declarative, multi-cloud, a state file you must protect and lock), CloudFormation (AWS only, state managed for you) and Pulumi (general-purpose languages). Then connect it to delivery: a pipeline that runs plan on a pull request, applies on merge, and promotes the same modules through dev, staging and production.

Containers in production and container orchestration

Container management questions cover both operations and security. Mention Kubernetes or a managed service such as EKS, AKS or GKE, resource requests and limits, health probes, rolling updates and horizontal pod autoscaling. For security, small base images, image scanning in the pipeline, non-root containers, network policies and secrets kept out of images. At scale, the hard parts are cluster upgrades, noisy neighbours, observability and cost. Have one incident ready where a probe or limit was set wrong.

Microservices patterns and serverless versus containers

You may be asked about microservices patterns: API gateway, service discovery, circuit breakers, event-driven messaging, and the saga pattern for distributed transactions. On serverless versus containers, weigh cold starts, execution time limits, cost at steady load against spiky load, and how much runtime control the team needs.

Questions

Which Infrastructure as Code tools come up in the micro1 cloud engineer interview?
Expect to compare tools. Terraform, CloudFormation, Pulumi and the Azure Bicep templates are the usual names, and the interviewer wants to hear how they differ on state handling, language and multi-cloud support.
Is there a coding challenge in the micro1 cloud engineer interview?
micro1 says technical roles include a coding challenge alongside the spoken questions, so be ready to write code or configuration during the session.
What does cloud work on Labeling Jobs pay for micro1 candidates?
One listing has cloud in the title: a Mercor Cloud / DevOps Engineer role at $75 to $110 an hour. micro1's DevOps Engineer listing pays $50 to $100 an hour. Both are AI training projects.
