Compensation strategy and salary benchmarking

You will be asked what a sound compensation strategy contains for a large employer and how it ties to long-term business goals. Talk about a stated market position (which percentile, for which roles), job architecture and levels, salary ranges with midpoints, and the mix of base, variable pay and equity. For salary benchmarking, name survey sources, explain job matching by content rather than title, ageing data to a common date, and blending sources. A weak answer says "we pay competitively" and stops.

Pay equity and regulatory compliance

This theme carries real risk, so the interviewer listens for process. Describe a pay equity audit: grouping comparable roles, controlling for legitimate factors such as level, location and performance, regression to find unexplained gaps, then a remediation budget and a record of decisions. For compliance, cover minimum wage and overtime classification, equal pay and pay transparency laws, benefits regulation in your jurisdiction, and how you keep up as rules change. Name the consequences of non-compliance (back pay, penalties, claims) and the controls that prevent them. Figures checked on 4 October 2026.

Benefits design and administration

Expect a question on building a benefits portfolio for a varied workforce and another on administration during a merger or acquisition. Mention employee surveys and claims data to see what people actually use, flexible or tiered options, cost modelling, and clear communication at enrolment. For mergers: inventory both sets of plans, map eligibility, decide whether to harmonise or keep plans side by side for a period, and protect people mid-claim.

Incentive programs and compensation analytics

Strong answers on incentives link metrics to things the team controls, set thresholds and caps, and test payout cost under several scenarios. For analytics, talk about compa-ratios, range penetration, turnover by pay position, and whether pay actually tracks performance ratings.
