micro1 DevOps Engineer Interview: Continuous Integration, IaC and Orchestration

Interview prep · 4 days ago

What the micro1 DevOps engineer interview with Zara covers: continuous integration at scale with automated tests and pipeline security, infrastructure as code for repeatable environments, and container orchestration in production, including cost and tool trade-offs. How to answer, and DevOps pay on Labeling Jobs.

The micro1 DevOps engineer interview is close to a design review of a delivery platform: how code gets built and tested, how infrastructure gets created, and how containers run in production without the bill or the pager getting out of hand. This guide prepares you for micro1's AI interview with Zara for the DevOps Engineer role, and Labeling Jobs is not affiliated with micro1. micro1 publishes a list of common DevOps engineer interview questions. They group into three themes, with security running through all of them.

Every micro1 interview is a spoken conversation with Zara, micro1's AI interviewer. How it runs, what proctoring involves and what happens afterwards are in our Zara interview guide, and you can rehearse with micro1's mock interview tool.

Continuous integration on large projects

Expect questions on CI for big codebases and on fitting automated testing into the pipeline. Strong answers mention trunk-based development or short-lived branches, fast feedback (unit tests first, slower integration and end-to-end stages later), parallelised and cached builds, monorepo tooling that only builds what changed, and flaky test quarantine. For pipeline security, cover least-privilege runners, secrets in a vault instead of variables, signed artifacts, dependency and image scanning, protected branches and required reviews, and pinned third-party actions. The weak answer describes a single Jenkins job and stops.

Infrastructure as code and continuous delivery

You will be asked how you make infrastructure scalable and repeatable, and how infrastructure as code (IaC) helps a team work together. Talk about Terraform, Pulumi or CloudFormation modules, remote state with locking, environments built from the same code with different variables, plan output reviewed in pull requests, and drift detection. For continuous delivery, describe immutable images, blue-green or canary releases, automated rollback on failed health checks, and GitOps tools such as Argo CD or Flux. Collaboration comes from changes going through review and history the way application code does.

Container orchestration in production

This is the largest group of DevOps engineer interview questions. For production, discuss resource requests and limits, liveness and readiness probes, pod disruption budgets, network policies, RBAC, secrets handling and observability. For cost, mention right-sizing from real usage, cluster autoscaling, spot or preemptible nodes for tolerant workloads, and bin packing. At enterprise scale, the problems are multi-cluster management, upgrades, tenant isolation and keeping config consistent. When comparing orchestrators, be fair: Swarm is simpler for small setups, Mesos fits mixed workloads, and Kubernetes has the ecosystem and the complexity that comes with it.
