micro1 Front-End Developer Interview: CSS Architecture, Cross-Browser Support and Performance
Interview prep · 2 days ago
What the micro1 Front-End Developer interview with Zara covers: scalable CSS architecture and responsive layouts, cross-browser compatibility and progressive enhancement, advanced JavaScript and state management, web performance and debugging. Includes the coding challenge and what developer roles pay on Labeling Jobs.
The micro1 Front-End Developer interview is broad rather than framework-specific: you are as likely to get a question about CSS specificity as about React state. This page prepares you for micro1's AI interview with Zara for the Front-End Developer role. Labeling Jobs is not affiliated with micro1. micro1 publishes its own Front-End Developer interview questions, and they reward people who have maintained a large codebase for a while. Four themes cover them.
Every micro1 interview is a spoken conversation with Zara, micro1's AI interviewer. How it runs, what proctoring involves and what happens afterwards are in our Zara interview guide, and you can rehearse with micro1's mock interview tool.
CSS architecture and responsive layouts
Expect questions on keeping HTML and CSS maintainable as a project grows. Semantic HTML first, then a naming convention like BEM or a component-scoped approach, a preprocessor such as Sass for variables and mixins, and low specificity so styles do not fight each other. Responsive layouts are next: CSS Grid and Flexbox, relative units (rem, %, viewport units), responsive images and SVG, and touch targets that work on a phone. A good answer explains how you organise breakpoints in a large app so they do not sprawl. "I use Tailwind" is fine if you can say why it fits the team.
Cross-browser compatibility and progressive enhancement
This theme checks how you handle the browsers you do not develop in. Talk about standards-compliant markup, feature detection rather than browser sniffing, autoprefixing in the build, and testing on real devices or a cloud browser service. Know the difference between progressive enhancement (start from a baseline that works everywhere, add features where supported) and graceful degradation (build the full experience, make sure it fails acceptably), and say which you prefer for which kind of product.
Advanced JavaScript and state management
Zara will probe JavaScript fundamentals: closures, promises and async/await, prototypal inheritance, modules, event delegation and the event loop. Pick one and explain it through a bug, such as a stale closure in a callback. For large applications, describe state management with Redux, Context or another store, immutable updates and one-way data flow. Modularising code matters too: ES modules, a bundler like Webpack or Vite, components with a single job and clear interfaces. Reciting definitions without code you have written is the weak answer.
Web performance and debugging
On web performance, cover minification, code splitting, lazy loading images and routes, deferring non-critical scripts and CSS, and fewer requests. Mention Core Web Vitals and Lighthouse if you measure with them. Debugging rounds this out: DevTools for the DOM, network and performance panels, breakpoints, tracing async code paths, linters and source maps. Describe one hard bug from report to fix.
