What you'll do

Gujarati is one of the scripts document models see least, even though a great deal of everyday Gujarati print exists: local newspapers, school textbooks, board exam papers, shop flyers and government notices. This project turns those pages into training data, with Gujarati sitting alongside four other Indic scripts plus Japanese and Korean.

The pages arrive ready; finding documents is Mercor's job. Your job on each page:

  • Check suitability first: Gujarati, legible, real content, no personal details. A fast rejection of a bad page is valued, not penalized
  • Segment the page: mark every meaningful element (headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, figures, diagrams, captions, formulas, questions, answer fields), label its type and set its position in reading order, including across columns
  • Connect related parts: link a caption or sub-element to the table or figure it belongs to
  • Transcribe exactly: in Gujarati script, never romanized, handwritten text included, with illegible areas flagged
  • Fill in page metadata: language, document type, source, dimensions, and flags for tables, formulas and handwriting

Everything is human-authored; parsing models are not used to generate any part of it. A second Gujarati expert reviews every task in full, and strong annotators graduate to reviewing.

Who fits

  • Native Gujarati speaker who handles the script's matras and conjunct forms without hesitation
  • Document experience of some kind: annotation, transcription, translation, localization, subtitling, proofreading, journalism, or regional-language data review
  • A proofreader's eye: a single wrong diacritic is treated as a defect
  • Discipline to apply the same labelling rules across hundreds of varied pages

Useful but optional: Gujarati AI data or bilingual evaluation work, MTPE or OCR correction, typesetting or digitization of Gujarati material, and familiarity with Unicode normalization and Gujarati keyboards.

What it pays

$12.68 per hour, the same rate as the Telugu version and the other Indic scripts on this project. Accuracy is the headline measure, but handling time is tracked too, so experience with Gujarati typing speed matters.

Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise. Mercor cannot support H-1B or STEM OPT candidates.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Documents are provided, and unsuitable pages can be flagged early
  • Varied material, from newspapers to handwritten worksheets
  • Reviewer progression for accurate annotators
  • 224 hires shown this month

Less good:

  • Low hourly rate for demanding character-level work
  • Time per task is monitored alongside quality
  • India-only
  • Independent contractor; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
