Mercor vs Alignerr: which to apply to, and how they differ
Platform comparison · 1 week ago
Mercor and Alignerr both pay experts weekly to train AI, but they screen, pay and hire differently. Mercor runs a 20-minute AI interview, background checks and 304 listings on this site; Alignerr, run by Labelbox, adds a one-shot Zara interview for some jobs and is open almost worldwide. Here is who should pick which, and how to do both.
The short answer
Pick Mercor if you have a professional credential or several years in a specialist field, can pass a background check, and live in a country on Mercor's supported list. It is where the volume is: as of 3 October 2026, 304 Mercor listings on this site against 3 for Alignerr, and Mercor states a rate on every one.
Pick Alignerr if you are a generalist, a native speaker of a language other than English, or a coder outside the countries Mercor serves. Alignerr says its experts work "from almost anywhere in the world", publishes no exclusion list, and runs entry-level transcription work alongside its specialist tracks.
If you can, apply to both. The two do not share an interview, a payment rail or a pay day, and neither one guarantees work after acceptance, so a second application is the cheapest insurance against a quiet spell.
This guide goes deeper on these two than our five-platform comparison. For the reference records, see the Mercor and Alignerr company pages.

Who is behind each one
Mercor is an independent company. It was founded in 2023 by Brendan Foody, Adarsh Hiremath and Surya Midha, and on 27 October 2025 it announced a $350 million Series C at a $10 billion valuation. It acts as a marketplace: AI labs bring projects, Mercor matches people to them, and you are engaged as an independent contractor. Two legal matters are on the record (a 2025 Scale AI lawsuit and a March 2026 security incident tied to the LiteLLM compromise, now the subject of class actions Mercor disputes); our Mercor page sets out both with dates.
Alignerr is not a standalone company in the same way. Its homepage title reads "Alignerr | Powered by Labelbox", and its About page describes it as "a Labelbox-led initiative" connecting subject experts with projects from AI labs. In practice that means you work inside Labelbox's platform, and Alignerr's help centre is the same content as Labelbox's. Its homepage claims "1K+ hired weekly", "$1M paid weekly" and "100,000+ experts"; those are Alignerr's own figures, and we cannot check them.
What the work looks like right now
On 3 October 2026 this site had 304 Mercor listings. Of those, 276 quote an hourly rate and 28 pay per task. Hourly rates run from $12.68 an hour (PDF annotation and transcription in Indian languages) up to $200–400 an hour (a radiologist role). Half of the hourly listings top out at $78 an hour or more, and 101 of them reach $100 or more. Fields include law, medicine, finance, physics, engineering, software, voice acting, audiobook QA and a large block of AI safety roles in specific language pairs.
Of the 304, 107 name specific countries, including 71 open only to people in the United States; the rest name none, which still leaves Mercor's own supported-countries list in force. Not every Mercor listing is a contract either: 247 are contracts, 37 part-time and 20 full-time, and some of the full-time ones are W-2 roles through Cincinnatus LLC. Read the employment line before you apply.
Alignerr had 3 listings on this site on the same date, all senior software engineering roles open worldwide: agentic coding at $80–120 an hour, AI evaluation and benchmarks at $80–100, and AI infrastructure at $60–100. That small number reflects what we have published, not the size of Alignerr's board.
Alignerr's own jobs board, when we loaded it on 3 October 2026, showed 60 roles, almost all audio transcription and transcript editing in Hindi, Simplified Chinese, Spanish (Spain), German, Brazilian Portuguese, French and Italian at $10–35 an hour, plus healthcare call review roles for Central American Spanish speakers at $15–20. Its homepage featured generalist cards (AI data quality, English writing, document review) at $40–120 an hour. The board changes often, so treat that as a snapshot.
Mercor's listings lean towards credentialed professionals at professional rates. Alignerr spans both ends, and on the day we checked its public board leaned towards language and audio work.
Getting in: the two interviews
People searching for the Alignerr interview usually mean the Zara interview, which works differently from Mercor's.
Mercor's AI interview
Mercor's documentation calls its recorded AI interview "the standard and only method for screening candidates". Most take about 20 minutes, the questions are generated from your résumé and the listing, and the result is reused across every listing that needs the same interview. You get up to three retakes per interview, shared across all applications, and Mercor states the latest attempt replaces earlier ones, including on applications already submitted. A weaker retake can undo a strong first attempt everywhere.
Mercor offers a free practice interview that is not shared with companies, and says to expect 2–4 weeks before hearing back. It gives no rejection feedback. The full detail is in our Mercor AI interview guide.
Alignerr's Zara interview
Alignerr says some jobs require a Zara AI interview or a domain assessment, and that you will be told if yours does. It is offered only if your profile meets the job's requirements. Coding interviews can include live coding; language interviews are mostly a live conversation about your experience.
Plan on a single attempt, which makes Alignerr stricter than Mercor here. Alignerr's interview FAQ allows a retake only after technical difficulties, while its troubleshooting article says retakes are "not currently allowed". The interview is marked failed if your camera is off, Alignerr warns against phones and tablets, and it gives no individual feedback or results. If you pass, you move into onboarding automatically. Zara is also the name of micro1's interviewer and the format looks the same, though neither company describes an arrangement; see our Zara guide and the Alignerr onboarding walkthrough.
What carries over between them
The interviews are separate systems on different platforms, and passing one says nothing to the other. What does carry over is preparation: a clean, text-based résumé (both build questions from it, and Alignerr says a messy file can stop Zara loading), a quiet room, a laptop with a working webcam, and no AI help during the session. Alignerr bans AI tools and outside help outright; Mercor's policy allows them only for grammar and wording checks.
Checks and paperwork before the first dollar
Both use Persona for identity: a government ID and a live selfie.
Mercor adds a background check after an offer. Its onboarding guide says these "typically take one to two weeks" and must clear before you log any hours; they may cover education, employment and criminal records, and ask for a seven-year address history. Some projects send a paid work trial first.
Alignerr has no background check in its published steps, but more administration: a contract in the app, billing setup it puts at about an hour, an introduction to the Labelbox platform, and a mandatory Discord account, which is where project notices arrive. Alignerr's own pages disagree on whether ID verification happens before or after you are matched; expect it around acceptance.
How pay actually reaches you
Both pay weekly and both state the rate on each listing. They differ in when and how the money moves.
- Mercor releases payouts on Wednesday around 12 PM PST for hours finalised the previous Friday; most funds arrive on Thursday, it says. Alignerr's week runs Monday to Sunday and it pays by the following Friday.
- Mercor uses Stripe Connect and falls back to Wise where Stripe is unavailable; a Wise payout waits until you accept an emailed transfer. Alignerr enables either Stripe Connect or PayPal per country, decided by the country on your ID, and you cannot choose. Check both against the payment platforms guide before you start.
- Mercor notes Stripe holds a first payout for 7 days. We found no equivalent hold in Alignerr's payment FAQs.
- Mercor pays for hours logged in its Insightful time tracker and says low-quality output does not invalidate legitimate hours already logged, though it affects your future on the platform. Alignerr bills per hour, per task, per task per turn or per media hour depending on the project, and its payment FAQ describes per-task projects where "tasks that are completed but not accepted are not paid". Its general FAQ says the opposite for low-quality work. Read the billing mode before you start.
- Alignerr's help centre says "a few projects in their evaluation phase are unpaid" and advises not starting until you are sure of the rate. Mercor describes some work trials as paid.
Mercor also caps weekly hours, which it says protects quality and avoids burnout. Alignerr's FAQ says many contributors spend 20 to 25 hours a week and sets no published minimum.
What workers report
These are worker reports, not platform statements.
- Trustpilot reviewers on Mercor's mercor.io page (4.3 from 781 reviews in the prior 12 months, checked 25 September 2026) mostly describe the interview as quick and payments as accurate and on time. The recurring complaints are silence after the interview, rejections without reasons, and long gaps between projects. A Blind user who received several offers said projects often lasted only one to two weeks.
- Alignerr's Trustpilot page showed 4.5 from 2,882 reviews on 30 September 2026, with reviewers praising the Zara interview and smooth onboarding. Complaints there, and on Glassdoor and Reddit, describe slow support, removals without explanation, disputed pay, and unpaid evaluation work followed by deactivation. Glassdoor reviewers, far fewer in number, also describe weeks without projects.
On both platforms, being accepted does not mean being given work. Our guide to being accepted but getting no tasks covers why.
Doing both
You can apply to both, and the timelines fit together. Mercor's 2–4 week wait after the interview is long enough to complete Alignerr's sign-up and land on its waiting list. We did not find an exclusivity rule on either platform's public pages; your contract is the authority, and project NDAs still apply.
A sensible order:
- Check eligibility first: your country against Mercor's supported list, and which of Stripe or PayPal Alignerr enables for your ID country.
- Fix your résumé once, since both platforms read it to build your interview.
- Do Mercor's practice interview before the real one, and treat retakes as scarce.
- Apply to specific Alignerr jobs rather than waiting on a general profile, and take the assessments they ask for.
- Keep both profiles current, since Mercor's Instant Offers and Alignerr's matching both read your availability and past performance.
For running several applications at once, see applying to several platforms at once.
What neither publishes
- Acceptance or pass rates, for the interviews or for the platforms
- A typical wait from acceptance to the first paid task
- A pass mark or rubric for Mercor's AI interview or Alignerr's Zara interview
- Mercor's weekly hours cap as a single figure; its policy page states the cap exists without one
- Whether Alignerr's interviews and assessments are paid; we found no page saying they are
- What happens to unpaid completed work after an Alignerr deactivation
- How many Alignerr contributors are active at a given time, as opposed to the "100,000+" it says have joined

Questions
- Is Mercor or Alignerr better?
- It depends on your background and location. Mercor suits credentialed professionals in a country on its supported list: it had 304 listings on this site as of 3 October 2026, most at professional hourly rates. Alignerr suits generalists, language specialists and people outside Mercor's countries, since it says its experts work from almost anywhere in the world. Applying to both is reasonable, because neither guarantees work after acceptance.
- What is the Alignerr interview?
- Some Alignerr jobs require a Zara AI interview or a domain assessment, and Alignerr says you will be told if yours does. Coding interviews can include live coding, while language interviews are mostly a conversation about your experience. Plan on one attempt: Alignerr's help articles disagree on whether a retake is allowed even after technical problems, and it marks the interview failed if your camera is off. It gives no individual feedback.
- Is Alignerr powered by Labelbox?
- Yes. Alignerr's homepage title reads "Alignerr | Powered by Labelbox", and its About page calls it a Labelbox-led initiative connecting subject experts with projects from AI labs. You work inside the Labelbox platform, and Alignerr's help centre carries the same content as Labelbox's.
- How do Mercor and Alignerr pay?
- Both pay weekly. Mercor releases payouts on Wednesday around 12 PM PST through Stripe Connect, or Wise where Stripe is unavailable, and Stripe holds a first payout for 7 days. Alignerr's week runs Monday to Sunday and it pays by the following Friday, through either Stripe Connect or PayPal depending on the country on your ID; you cannot choose.
- Is the Mercor interview the same as Alignerr's Zara interview?
- No. Mercor runs its own recorded AI interview of about 20 minutes, with up to three retakes shared across applications, and the latest attempt replaces earlier ones. Alignerr uses Zara, the same name as micro1's interviewer, and you should plan on a single attempt. A result on one platform does not carry to the other, but the same résumé and setup preparation helps at both.
- Can I work for Mercor and Alignerr at the same time?
- We found no exclusivity rule on either platform's public pages, so the contract you sign is the authority, and project NDAs still apply. The timelines fit well: Mercor says to expect 2 to 4 weeks after its interview, which is long enough to complete Alignerr's sign-up. Check Mercor's supported-countries list and which payment provider Alignerr enables for your country first.
