  • linguistic annotation
  • proofreading
  • transcription software
  • attention to detail

What you'll do

Gujarati is spoken across Gujarat, in Mumbai, and in large diaspora communities in East Africa, the UK and North America, and the speech in a transcription queue tends to reflect that spread. The job is to listen to Gujarati audio and write down exactly what is said, keeping the language authentic rather than tidying it into textbook Gujarati, and preserving the context of what speakers mean.

After the first pass you proofread and edit your own transcripts for clarity, grammar and fidelity to the audio. On top of the text you annotate linguistic nuance: cultural references, regional dialect features, and other details the guidelines ask you to mark. The ad also expects you to give feedback on the transcription guidelines and tools themselves, keep style and terminology consistent across submissions, and report progress or problems to project coordinators in writing and by voice.

Who fits

  • Native or near-native spoken and written Gujarati, with real familiarity with regional variation (Kathiawadi, Surti and other varieties)
  • Experience in audio transcription, captioning or linguistic annotation, ideally in Gujarati
  • A high accuracy rate on both transcription and review
  • Clear written and verbal communication for reporting to coordinators
  • Ability to manage deadlines on your own in a remote setup
  • Transcription software experience, and an interest in language technology, count in your favour

All of these are listed as preferred qualifications, and the ad says no prior AI experience is needed.

What it pays

$8–12/hour, the lowest band among micro1's current Indian-language transcription listings. The Tamil and Telugu transcription roles are published at $10–24. The ad does not say whether the rate applies to hours worked or hours of audio, and publishes no payment schedule or weekly volume.

At these rates the role makes most sense as flexible side income or as a way into micro1's language projects, where evaluation work typically pays more.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Near-native speakers qualify, not only native ones
  • No AI background required; Gujarati skill is the qualification
  • Fully remote with no country restriction stated
  • Giving feedback on guidelines is part of the role, so careful contributors get heard

Less good:

  • $8 floor and $12 ceiling, low for careful dialect-aware transcription
  • Only 10 openings
  • Hours, project length and volume are not stated
  • The customer is not named
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
