Is Handshake AI legit? Who runs it, whether it pays, and the lawsuits against it

Safety check · By Nikolaos Petridis

Published

Handshake AI is a real programme run by the company behind the Handshake careers network, and it is not a scam. Some contractors say they were suspended and lost pay, though, and two proposed class actions allege workers are misclassified. Here is what Handshake publishes, what the court record shows, and how to spot fake Handshake messages.

The short answer

Yes, Handshake AI is legit: it is a real programme, run by the company behind the Handshake careers network, and it pays people for AI training work. We found no evidence that it is a scam. People searching for "Handshake AI scam" usually have one of two other problems in mind. Impostors do send fake Handshake messages, and some contractors say they were suspended and lost pay for finished work.

Two proposed class actions now allege that Handshake wrongly treats its workers as independent contractors. Neither has been decided. This guide keeps Handshake's own statements, the court record and contractor accounts apart, so you can weigh each one. For eligibility and project matching, see our Handshake AI fellowship guide, and for the short reference record, our Handshake AI company page.

Who runs it

Handshake AI's terms of service, last updated 20 August 2026, name the operator as Stryder Corp. d/b/a Handshake. The terms are governed by California law. Court papers also name a second company, Handshake AI Solutions, LLC.

The programme page claims "188k+ fellows" and "$500M+ payouts made". Those are Handshake's own figures, and we have not checked them. Its pages name no AI lab as a client, although Business Insider has reported on contractors working on OpenAI projects.

What it pays, and what can reduce it

The programme page headlines "Earn up to $100/hr". On 6 November 2026 its role list ran from up to $17 an hour for an AI Evaluation Specialist to up to $150 an hour for a Software Engineer role aimed at PhDs and postdocs. Those are ceilings for specific roles, and the list changes.

Handshake's pay models article explains why a real payout can come in below the rate you saw:

  • Every hourly project has a time cap per task, and you are paid "up to that cap per task, regardless of how long it actually took"
  • On per-task projects, tasks "that never reach Ready to Deliver don't earn the per-task amount", and a task can be sent back for revisions first
  • "Handshake may introduce weekly hourly caps"
  • Your project dashboard is "the source of truth" if anything conflicts with the article

Payouts go through Stripe. Our fellowship guide has the weekly schedule and what counts as paid time.

What contractors have reported

Everything in this section comes from one report: Business Insider's article of 4 March 2026, as republished by AOL.

Five contractors who worked on OpenAI projects told Business Insider that Handshake suspended their accounts without warning between late December and January. Four said they were not paid for work they had completed. Some said they lost up to several thousand dollars; one US-based contractor put it at about 50 hours of work, worth hundreds of dollars. The article says dozens of others shared similar accounts on Reddit.

When contractors asked why, Handshake said they had broken their contracts. In one contractor's correspondence it cited "discrepancies" in background credentials, task times three to four times above benchmarks, and working from outside the US. That contractor denied all three. Handshake support wrote: "This decision is final. There is no appeal process, and any work associated with this violation is not eligible for payment." A Handshake representative declined to comment to Business Insider.

The same article describes two individual cases. One contractor sued in small claims court for $9,600, then filed to dismiss the case in mid-January. Another filed an unpaid wages suit, saying Handshake withheld pay after accusing them of using AI; the court ruled that the contractor should be paid $6,475. Handshake's contractor agreement says using LLMs "is strictly prohibited unless otherwise authorized in writing by Handshake". Business Insider could not confirm whether that clause was in place when that contractor started.

Handshake's terms of service reserve the right to suspend or terminate access for violations of its terms or policies. Its Project Removal article, as we read it on 1 October 2026, says you can request an appeal if you are removed from a project, which differs from what that contractor was told.

The lawsuits

We found two proposed class actions. In both, the claims are allegations that no court has ruled on.

Boggs v. Stryder Corp. d/b/a Handshake (case 3:26-cv-07498-TSH, US District Court for the Northern District of California) was filed on 20 July 2026 against Stryder Corp. and Handshake AI Solutions, LLC. Law360 reported that it alleges Handshake misclassified thousands of college students and others as independent contractors while controlling their assignments, pay and work methods. On 22 October 2026 the court stayed the case pending a mediation scheduled for 4 February 2027, with a joint status report due the next day. The order expressly preserves Handshake's right to compel arbitration.

Kroul v. Stryder Corp. dba Handshake AI was filed on 2 September 2026 in Los Angeles Superior Court, according to a legal news update on contractor cases. It is a class action under the California Labor Code with a representative claim under California's Private Attorneys General Act. It alleges failure to pay minimum wage and overtime, to provide rest and meal periods, and to reimburse expenses such as internet and phone costs.

We read the Boggs stay order but not either complaint, so the allegations above come from those reports. Handshake's terms of service require binding individual arbitration and rule out class actions, so the arbitration right preserved in the Boggs order could decide whether that case goes ahead as a class.

Fake Handshake messages

This is the real scam risk, and Handshake publishes a warning about it. Handshake and its partners "never ask for sensitive information" by text, in-app message, email, phone, social media or WhatsApp. That covers passwords, Social Security numbers, bank details and card numbers. The article says sensitive details go only through Persona (identity) and Stripe (payments and tax). Handshake's tax forms article also names TaxBandits as the integration behind the tax forms on your dashboard.

Handshake lists these warning signs:

  • Misspelled or lookalike domains, such as joinhandhsake.com and joinhandshake-careers.com
  • Gmail addresses posing as project leads
  • A request to leave Handshake to apply or to share personal details
  • A Google Form for "validation" that asks for your Handshake code or password
  • Urgent threats, and accounts calling themselves "Handshake Support"
  • Requests for money by wire transfer, gift card or cryptocurrency

If you are unsure about a message, contact Handshake support to confirm the address before you reply. Our guide to spotting fake AI training listings covers the warning signs that apply across platforms.

If you join: keep your own records

These are our suggestions, drawn from the disputes above. Handshake does not publish them.

  • Save the project invitation, pay type, rate and project terms when you accept
  • Read the Contractor Agreement for rules on AI tools, and get any permission in writing
  • Work only from an approved location, because working from outside the US was one of the reasons cited for a suspension
  • Keep your own log of tasks, hours and payouts, so you still have them if your dashboard access ends
  • If payments stop matching your log, raise it before you take on more work

If a dispute involves real money, a lawyer or your state labor agency can explain your options. We cannot give legal advice.

Is it worth applying?

If you are in the US with a work authorization Handshake supports, it is a reasonable platform to apply to. Handshake says hours are not guaranteed, so do not plan your rent around it, and given the reports above, keep your records from day one.

Apply to one or two other platforms at the same time. Mercor, micro1, Outlier, Alignerr and Handshake AI compared suggests which to pair it with, and the jobs board lists open roles elsewhere.

Questions

Is Handshake AI a scam?
No. Handshake AI is run by Stryder Corp. d/b/a Handshake, the company behind the Handshake careers network, and it publishes its terms and a help centre. The scam risk comes from impersonators using lookalike domains, Gmail addresses and Google Forms. Separately, some contractors told Business Insider they were suspended and not paid for finished work, and two proposed class actions are open.
Does Handshake AI actually pay?
Its help centre describes payouts through Stripe, and its programme page claims more than $500M paid out, a figure we have not checked. Business Insider reported in March 2026 that four contractors on OpenAI projects said they were not paid for completed work after their accounts were suspended, and Handshake told one of them there was no appeal. The reported amounts ranged from hundreds to several thousand dollars.
Is there a lawsuit against Handshake AI?
Yes, two that we found. Boggs v. Stryder Corp. was filed in federal court in Northern California on 20 July 2026 and was stayed on 22 October 2026 pending mediation on 4 February 2027. Kroul v. Stryder Corp. was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on 2 September 2026. Both concern worker classification and pay, and neither has been decided.
How can I tell if a Handshake AI message is real?
Handshake says it and its partners never ask for sensitive information by text, in-app message, email, phone, social media or WhatsApp. Sensitive details go only through Persona and Stripe. Requests for money, a Google Form asking for your password or code, Gmail addresses and misspelled domains such as joinhandhsake.com are signs of a fake.
