What you'll do

The Korean arm of Mercor's document annotation project works the same way as its Indic siblings, with two differences worth knowing up front: it pays far more, and it asks you to handle hanja. Older and formal Korean documents still mix Chinese characters into Hangul text, and the ad wants those transcribed as they appear rather than skipped or converted.

Pages are sourced and uploaded for you. For each page you:

  • Screen it: Korean, legible, real content, no personal details; flag unusable pages at the start
  • Annotate structure: box every meaningful region (title, heading, paragraph, list, table, figure, diagram, caption, formula, question, answer field), assign a type, and set reading order, including across multi-column and vertical-to-horizontal layouts where they occur
  • Link parents: tie captions and sub-parts to their table or figure
  • Transcribe: exactly in Hangul, never romanized, with any hanja and handwriting reproduced, and illegible areas flagged
  • Add metadata: language, document type, source, page dimensions, and table, formula and handwriting flags

Material spans newspapers, textbooks, exams, flyers, forms, manuals, menus and notices. Nothing is machine-drafted, and every task gets a full second-expert review; experienced annotators take on reviewing.

Who fits

  • Native Korean speaker with full command of Hangul, and of hanja where it appears in older or formal documents
  • Background in bilingual transcription, translation, editorial work or AI training data, ideally including reviewer experience (a slightly higher bar than the Indic versions, which accept broader document experience)
  • Precision at the jamo level: one wrong jamo is a defect
  • Consistent use of a taxonomy across hundreds of pages

Nice to have: AI data annotation or bilingual evaluation, MTPE, subtitling, OCR post-editing, Korean typesetting or digitization, and a grasp of Unicode normalization, jamo composition and hanja input.

What it pays

$33.58 per hour, about two and a half times the $12.68 paid on the Indic versions such as Bengali. The difference tracks the eligible countries rather than the work, which is essentially identical. Accuracy is the first measure; handling time is tracked alongside.

Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise. Mercor cannot support H-1B or STEM OPT candidates.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Open in four countries: Canada, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States
  • The best rate in this project family
  • Documents supplied and a clear path to reviewer work
  • 248 hires shown this month

Less good:

  • Hanja competence is expected, which not every native speaker has
  • Handling time is monitored alongside quality
  • Independent contractor; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
