What you'll do

Bengali has one of the largest reading populations of any language covered by this project, yet document models still handle its dense conjuncts and multi-column newspaper layouts poorly. Mercor's project pays native speakers to build clean, human-made page annotations so they can learn. Bengali is one of five Indic scripts in the dataset, alongside Japanese and Korean.

Each task is one PDF page that Mercor has already sourced. The workflow:

  • Triage: is it Bengali, readable, substantive, and free of personal details? If not, flag it before you invest time
  • Layout annotation: box every meaningful region (titles, headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, figures, diagrams, captions, formulas, questions, answer fields), assign its type and give it a reading-order number that follows how a Bengali reader would actually move through the page
  • Relationships: tie captions and sub-parts to their parent table or figure
  • Transcription: every region in Bengali script exactly as printed or handwritten, never transliterated, with unreadable spots flagged
  • Metadata: language, document type, source, page size, and flags for tables, formulas and handwriting

All of it is done by people; nothing is pre-filled by a parser. A second Bengali expert reviews each task in full, and experienced annotators take over that review role.

Who fits

  • Native Bengali speaker with full command of the script, including its diacritics and joined consonant forms
  • Experience with documents: annotation, transcription, translation, localization, subtitling, proofreading, journalism, or regional-language data review
  • Character-level care: one misplaced vowel sign counts as a defect
  • Methodical consistency across hundreds of pages
  • Comfort with messy material: exam papers, handwritten forms, crowded newspaper pages

Bonus skills: Bengali AI data work or bilingual evaluation, MTPE, OCR correction, typesetting or digitization, and knowledge of Unicode normalization and Bengali input methods.

What it pays

$12.68 per hour, the same as the other Indic scripts on this project, such as Telugu and Gujarati. Accuracy comes first but handling time is also tracked.

Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise. Mercor cannot support H-1B or STEM OPT candidates.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Pages are supplied, and a clear screening step protects you from wasted effort
  • Real published Bengali documents, not templated samples
  • Reviewer track for accurate annotators
  • 263 hires shown this month

Less good:

  • The location requirement is India only, so Bengali speakers in Bangladesh are not eligible under this listing
  • Low hourly pay for exacting work
  • Speed is measured alongside accuracy
  • Independent contractor; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
