What you'll do

Of the five Indic scripts in this Mercor document project, Odiya is probably the one with the least digitized text available to train on, which is exactly why the project wants it. The work turns real, published Odiya pages into a structural map plus a faithful transcription, so document and vision-language models can learn to read the script. The dataset also covers Japanese and Korean.

Every page is sourced and uploaded for you. On each one:

  • Vet the page: Odiya, legible, real content, no personal details. Flag unsuitable pages before starting
  • Annotate structure: outline each meaningful region (title, heading, paragraph, list, table, figure, diagram, caption, formula, question, answer field), assign a component type and a reading-order index
  • Record parent links: attach captions and sub-parts to their figure or table
  • Transcribe: exact Odiya script for every region, handwriting included; no romanization; flag what cannot be read
  • Add metadata: language, document type, source, page size, and table, formula and handwriting flags

People do all of it, with no model-generated drafts. A second Odiya expert reviews every task end to end, and experienced annotators are moved into that role.

Who fits

  • Native Odiya speaker in full command of the script, its diacritics and conjunct forms
  • Document experience: annotation, transcription, translation, localization, subtitling, proofreading, journalism, or regional-language data review
  • Character-level accuracy ahead of speed
  • Consistency across hundreds of pages, and comfort with multi-column newspapers, exam papers and handwritten forms

Extras that help: Odiya AI data or bilingual evaluation, MTPE, OCR correction, typesetting or digitization of Odiya material, and Unicode and Odiya input method knowledge. Because the pool of experienced Odiya annotators is smaller than for bigger languages, solid proofreading or journalism experience may count for more here.

What it pays

$12.68 per hour, the same as the other Indic versions (Telugu, Gujarati, Bengali, Malayalam). Accuracy is measured first and handling time second.

Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise. Mercor cannot support H-1B or STEM OPT candidates.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Paid work in a language with few AI data projects
  • Pages provided, with an explicit screening step
  • A reviewer path for accurate contributors
  • 173 hires shown this month

Less good:

  • Low rate for detailed work
  • Handling time is tracked
  • India-only
  • Independent contractor; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
