What you'll do

Most listings on this site are for the people who label, write or grade AI training data. This one is for the person who keeps that machine running. "Human data" is the industry's name for everything people produce to train models, and a Human Data Manager owns the workflows that turn a crowd of contributors into a clean dataset.

The ad lists the responsibilities in operations terms:

  • Design, build and manage workflows for annotation, data collection, processing and analysis
  • Set and monitor KPIs, and use them to make decisions about the operation
  • Analyse datasets for insights and recommend changes that speed things up
  • Align data strategy with business goals, working across teams
  • Build and maintain reporting that tracks metrics and workflow improvements
  • Refine processes so they scale without losing data integrity or quality
  • Take ownership of operational problems and fix them hands-on

In practice that means you are closer to throughput, quality scores and contributor workflows than to the data itself, though you will need to understand annotation well enough to spot when a guideline or a pipeline is producing bad labels.

Who fits

  • Technical aptitude, with real experience in data analysis, annotation or workflow optimisation
  • Familiarity with operational processes and an appetite for making them more efficient
  • The ability to explain data-driven findings clearly, in writing and out loud
  • Comfort with pressure and a fast-moving environment
  • Strong collaboration skills and attention to detail on data quality and validation

Preferred, not required: an engineering or technical background with an operations focus or human data project experience; data visualisation tools (Excel, Tableau, Power BI) or programming (Python, SQL); and internship or project experience in data management, AI/ML or process optimisation. The ad says no prior AI experience is required.

No minimum years are stated. micro1 runs a separate New Grad version of this role, which suggests this one expects some working experience beyond graduation.

What it pays

$40–60/hour, micro1's published band, for a full-time role. At a 40-hour week that is roughly $83,000–125,000 a year before tax, though the ad says employment terms vary by region, so whether you are an employee or a contractor (and what benefits come with it) depends on where you are hired.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • A full-time role, rare on a board dominated by hourly contract work
  • A route from hands-on annotation or QA into operations management
  • Python and SQL are a plus, not a gate
  • Remote, with hiring open across several regions

Less good:

  • One opening, so competition is likely to be strong
  • Employment terms vary by region and are not published
  • The ad is generic: no client, team size or project type is named
  • "Thrive under pressure" in a fast-paced environment signals a demanding pace
