What you'll do

The work lives inside real codebases. You explore repositories you have never seen, implement and debug front-end and back-end changes, trace execution across services, APIs, databases and dependencies, reproduce bugs and find their root causes, and write fixes that fit the project's existing architecture and contribution norms. Tests are part of every change: unit, integration, regression and end-to-end.

Two parts are specific to this project. You review AI-generated patches for correctness, completeness, security and maintainability, and you help translate complete coding builds from one language into another, which is a much bigger job than porting a function.

Who qualifies

  • A public or otherwise verifiable GitHub profile
  • Meaningful ownership of, or contributions to, one or more open-source repositories
  • Strong engineering experience in front-end, back-end, full-stack, systems, developer tooling, infrastructure or a similar area
  • Several programming languages; the ad names TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Java, Go, Rust, C++, C#, Ruby and PHP
  • The ability to pick up and change unfamiliar codebases

The contribution bar is explicit: documentation edits, dependency bumps, formatting changes and typo fixes do not count. Expect to be asked about specific repositories, pull requests, issues and code you wrote yourself.

What it pays

$100–150/hour as published, but pay is output-based: per task that meets the project specifications, with a minimum number of tasks per week. The per-task fee and weekly minimum are not published. The ad describes roughly 15 hours a week on a flexible schedule you choose, weekends included.

The process is screening questions, an AI interview of about 30 minutes, and a hiring manager review. micro1 says it fills roles within 48 hours and first tasks start 24–48 hours after onboarding.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Open globally, with no country restriction
  • Your public open-source record is the credential; no degree is asked for
  • Real engineering in real repositories
  • 100 openings, flagged as high demand
  • Flexible hours around 15 a week

Less good:

  • Per-task pay with an unpublished weekly minimum
  • Cross-language build ports can balloon well past a task's expected time
  • The contribution bar rules out people whose best work is in private company code
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
