Skills
  • document-based research
  • fact-checking
  • source verification
  • news writing
  • journalism

What you'll do

You are handed a set of documents and asked to write the story that is in them. The sources are public records, reports and long filings; the output is a straight news article or a summary built with the conventions a newsroom would recognise (a proper lead, inverted pyramid structure, no opinion).

Accuracy carries more weight than style here. Every claim needs to trace back to the documents, and you keep a record of your research method and citation trail so someone else can check the path from source to sentence. Drafts go through rounds of editorial feedback, much like a desk edit, and you revise for structure, clarity and factual consistency.

What the model is learning from you is the discipline of document journalism: how to find the finding in two hundred pages, and how to say it without overreaching.

Who fits

  • At least four years as a reporter or correspondent at a recognised media outlet
  • A document-heavy beat: investigative, business or science reporting are the examples given
  • A track record of rigorous sourcing and fact-checking on verifiable reporting rather than commentary
  • Comfort synthesising large volumes of material into a structured narrative
  • Familiarity with journalistic standards on transparency, citation and public records
  • Remote editorial collaboration experience helps

Columnists and opinion writers are, by the ad's own wording, not the target.

What it pays

$40–75/hour, micro1's published band. No compensation structure is stated, so it is not clear whether the figure is paid per hour worked or derived from per-article rates. At the upper end it compares well with freelance news rates, which rarely work out that high per hour once research time is counted.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Fifty openings and a high-demand flag, so the intake is broad
  • Rewards the unglamorous skills (records work, verification) that freelance markets often underpay
  • No AI experience needed
  • Fully remote

Less good:

  • The four-year outlet requirement rules out many freelancers and newsletter writers
  • No hours, deadlines or article volume stated
  • You write for training data, not bylines; nothing here builds a public portfolio
  • Contractor engagement with no benefits
