What you'll do

Cantonese is not just spoken Mandarin with a different accent. Hong Kong and Guangdong speakers use their own vocabulary for distress, written Cantonese differs from standard written Chinese, and an AI model trained on Mandarin text can miss both. This role asks you to supply that layer.

The ad's scope of work: analyse psychological case studies and documentation and give feedback from your own practice; build culturally sensitive scenarios and materials in Cantonese and English for model training; evaluate AI-generated content for accuracy, ethics and fit with good psychological practice; and document how you evaluated it, clearly enough for someone else to reproduce. You also use both languages to interpret and refine assessments so they hold up across the language and cultural divide. The customer is not named.

Who fits

micro1 lists these as preferred qualifications:

  • A PhD in psychology, with experience in both clinical and academic settings
  • Native or near-native Cantonese and English, including technical psychological terminology in both
  • Strong analytical judgment and a record of ethical decision-making
  • Experience developing or evaluating case studies and psychological assessments
  • Strong writing, especially carrying subtle psychological concepts between Cantonese and English
  • Comfort with remote collaboration and documentation tools
  • Cultural sensitivity in multicultural settings

No AI background is needed. The ad names no country, so clinicians in Hong Kong, Macau, Guangdong or the Cantonese-speaking diaspora all fit the brief as written. Its call for both clinical and academic experience favours people who have supervised or taught as well as practised.

How it compares

This is the Cantonese entry in a family of micro1 listings at the same $100–200/hour band, alongside the Vietnamese, Russian and Japanese psychologist roles. A psychiatrist version with a medical degree requirement was posted the same day. For scale, micro1's Cantonese Language Evaluator pays $30–40/hour, so the clinical qualification is worth several times the language skill on its own.

What it pays

$100–200/hour, micro1's published band. The ad does not say what decides placement within it, and gives no pay structure, weekly hours or project length.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • 70 openings
  • Values Cantonese specifically, rather than treating it as interchangeable with Mandarin
  • Evaluation and scenario writing suit clinicians who also teach or research
  • Remote, with no country restriction on the ad

Less good:

  • A 2x pay spread with no published basis for placement
  • No hours, duration, pay structure or start date stated
  • Working through detailed case material can be emotionally heavy
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits, and tax is yours to handle
