What you'll do
If you have written a midterm prompt and then argued with yourself about how to grade it, you already know this job. You design sociology assessment tasks that are clear and measurable enough for a different instructor to use without you in the room, and you write a rubric that lines up with each task, grounded in recognised pedagogical frameworks such as Bloom's taxonomy.
Alongside that, you review educational materials and give actionable feedback on clarity, rigour and authenticity, and you draw on current sociological literature so tasks and rubrics stay academically sound. Each piece needs a short written rationale explaining what it assesses and why, so it transfers between contexts. Collaboration with other experts is asynchronous, and materials go through revision rounds.
Who fits
- A PhD or ABD in sociology or a closely related discipline
- An active record of postsecondary teaching and research or publication
- Real practice designing assessments and rubrics, not just grading against someone else's
- Knowledge of Bloom's taxonomy and other assessment frameworks
- The ability to turn dense theory into clear, usable teaching material
- Constructive, objective peer review and strong academic writing
No AI experience is required.
What it pays
$50–90/hour, micro1's published band. No compensation structure or weekly hours are stated. For comparison with typical adjunct pay, even the bottom of the band is generous per hour, which makes this a strong fit for ABD candidates and adjuncts looking for flexible income.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Fifty openings and a high-demand flag
- Pays well relative to adjunct teaching
- Uses assessment design skill, which is transferable to course work
- Remote, no country restriction stated
Less good:
- PhD or ABD is expected; a master's alone is unlikely to be enough
- An active teaching and research record is asked for, which may exclude people who have left academia
- No hours, duration or pay structure published
- Contractor engagement, no benefits
