What you'll do
This is the engineering variant of a presentation project, and it leans further into documentation than its siblings. You reconstruct technical slides for clarity and impact, design decks that explain complex software concepts, and build visualisations that carry a technical narrative. You also document system architectures and engineering processes in clear, structured formats, which is closer to writing a good design doc than to making slides pretty.
Across all of it you edit for accuracy and coherence against industry practice and apply critical thinking to the storytelling flow. Think of the architecture review deck that has to land with both the staff engineers and the VP: this project is training models to produce that.
Who fits
- A proven software engineering background and familiarity with modern system architecture
- Advanced PowerPoint and presentation design
- Data visualisation that turns technical data into clear visuals
- Technical documentation and editing for engineering audiences
- The ability to explain technical topics to mixed audiences in writing
- Close attention to detail and a collaborative style
All are listed as preferred, and no AI experience is needed. The unusual combination is engineering depth plus genuine presentation craft; plenty of engineers have the first and avoid the second.
What it pays
$150–350/hour, micro1's published band. For a software engineer, that is competitive with senior contracting rates for work that involves no coding. The ad does not say what places you in the band or whether pay is hourly or per deliverable.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Senior-engineer money for communication rather than code
- Rewards engineers who already write the design docs and architecture decks on their team
- Asynchronous, no AI experience needed
- "High demand" badge
Less good:
- Real presentation design skill is expected; engineering seniority alone will not carry it
- 7 openings
- US, UK or Canada only
- Wide band with no published placement criteria
- No hours, duration or start date published
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
