How getting hired at AfterQuery works: the assessment, onboarding checks and the wait

Interview prep · By Nikolaos Petridis

Published Revised

AfterQuery does not appear to use an AI interview. It uses one unpaid, non-retakeable assessment per expert pool, then Persona identity checks and Stripe setup, then a wait to be matched. This guide covers what it publishes, what workers report on Trustpilot and what it leaves out.

Short answer

AfterQuery does not appear to run an AI interview. Its own help centre describes a different gate: one unpaid assessment per expert pool, built to look like real project work, followed by onboarding with identity checks and a wait to be matched to a project. This guide covers what AfterQuery publishes about that path, what workers report, and what it leaves out. For the company itself (funding, pay mechanics, payouts), see the AfterQuery company page.

The path, in order

  1. Choose a pool and apply. AfterQuery's help centre says each open expert pool has its own assessment, chosen from the Assessments tab. Some listings ask for more at the application stage. The research coding task listings on our site (for example Software Engineering Researcher) ask for a link to a paper you authored, its released code and the headline result from the paper, and say candidates who supply these are prioritised. The same ad says AfterQuery runs thorough background checks. The help centre pages we could open do not describe a background check, so we cannot say how or when it happens.
  2. Take the assessment. The help centre says it is "built to resemble real project work rather than an abstract multiple choice test". Length varies by pool and a time estimate is shown before you start.
  3. Wait. There is no explicit pass or fail notice. AfterQuery says not hearing back soon usually means no matching project exists yet, and that projects are assigned based on assessment fit.
  4. Onboarding. The help centre lists steps that open in order at experts.afterquery.com/onboarding: sign in with the Google account you applied with, sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement and a Data Submission Form, verify your phone through Persona, verify your identity through Persona with a government ID and a selfie, and set up payments with Stripe. LinkedIn is optional and said to improve your chances of selection. Steps 1 to 4 must be done before you can be paid. AfterQuery estimates 10 to 15 minutes.
  5. Project selection. If chosen, you get a welcome email from notifications@afterquery.com with next steps, which may include a Slack workspace or the Chat tab and a message to your project admin.

The assessment

What AfterQuery says in its assessments article:

  • One attempt. You cannot retake or reassess. The page advises treating it with the same care as real project work.
  • Unpaid.
  • No result sent. Silence is the normal outcome while no project fits.
  • Scored per pool. You can take assessments for several pools. Each is scored independently and results do not carry over between pools.
  • Questions about an assessment go to support@afterquery.com.

AfterQuery does not publish the content of any assessment, a pass mark or a scoring rubric. Because there is one attempt and it resembles project work, the sensible preparation is to read the listing closely and work the way you would on the job. Our general guide on passing AI training qualification tests and assessments covers habits that apply here.

Identity and name matching

AfterQuery's onboarding page says Persona handles the identity check and Stripe runs its own separate checks for payouts. Accepted documents include driver licences, state IDs, passports and several immigration documents. Blurry photos, screenshots, photos of screens and expired documents get flagged. Your account name must match your ID, including middle names, and the same legal name should appear on your AfterQuery account, Stripe and your bank to avoid payout holds. For how these checks work across platforms, see identity verification on AI training platforms.

After you are in

AfterQuery's contract work article says tasks are assigned based on your skills and experience, quality ratings, availability and performance history, that higher-rated contributors get priority access, and that contracts continue as long as quality standards are met. Its work guidelines say work is measured on accuracy, consistency, completeness, timeliness and communication, and that high performers get priority on premium tasks.

Pay figures from listings on our site, dated 30 October 2026: the ten AfterQuery research coding task listings we checked each show $80/hour on the board. The Software Engineering Researcher ad itself describes pay as $200 per approved task, so treat the hourly figure as nominal. Rates belong to each listing; AfterQuery publishes no platform-wide rate.

What workers report

This section is worker reports, not AfterQuery statements. We read AfterQuery's Trustpilot page on 30 October 2026. On 3 November 2026 it showed a TrustScore of 2.5 from 94 reviews, with 39% one-star. We could not find Reddit, Glassdoor or Blind threads about the screening itself, so everything here comes from Trustpilot.

  • The assessment can be bigger than expected. One reviewer (18 October 2026) wrote that it "was a lot more than I anticipated". Another (16 October 2026) said a task advertised as 2 hours took 6 to 8.
  • Review is slow. Reviewers in July 2026 described assessment reviews going about two months without feedback, and slow review of submissions and payments. One October reviewer alleged that review is delayed on purpose to avoid paying; that is an allegation, and we saw no reply from AfterQuery.
  • Quality rejections. One reviewer (23 October 2026) said legitimate work was rejected for "not following quality standards"; another said feedback was contradictory.
  • Onboarding is mixed. One reviewer (27 October 2026) called it a "smooth onboarding experience"; another (20 October 2026) found the instructions confusing and said the photo requirements were not explained clearly in advance.
  • Closures. A reviewer (21 October 2026) said projects were removed before work could be submitted, and another (26 September 2026) said an account was closed without a stated reason with completed work unpaid.
  • Payment, when it happens, is praised. One reviewer (29 July 2026) said payments arrived in under 24 hours.

How to prepare

  • Read the listing and the pool description before you start the assessment; you only get one attempt
  • Block out more time than the estimate shown, given reports of overruns
  • For research coding listings, have your paper link, code link and headline result ready
  • Use the exact legal name on your ID everywhere, and a sharp photo of an unexpired document taken with your camera
  • Check the Stripe supported-country list on the company page before you invest the time
  • Apply to other platforms while you wait; silence is the default
  • Keep to official channels: AfterQuery says its emails come only from notifications@afterquery.com or an @afterquery.com address

What AfterQuery does not publish

  • Whether any interview exists. A search result pointed to an application-process page that mentions an optional interview, but that page returned an error when we tried to open it, so we do not rely on it
  • The content, length or pass mark of any assessment
  • How long assessment or task review takes
  • A pass rate or a count of how many applicants get matched to projects
  • Any feedback to applicants who are not matched
  • How or when background checks run
  • A platform-wide pay rate

Questions

Does AfterQuery have an AI interview?
None that AfterQuery documents in the help centre pages we could open. Its screening is one assessment per expert pool, built to resemble real project work, followed by onboarding with phone and identity verification. Some listings also ask for a paper and code link at application.
Can I retake the AfterQuery assessment?
No. AfterQuery's help centre says you get one attempt per pool and cannot retake or reassess. The assessment is unpaid. You can take assessments for other pools, but each is scored independently and results do not carry over.
Will AfterQuery tell me if I passed the assessment?
Not explicitly. AfterQuery says you will not receive a pass or fail notice, and that silence usually means no matching project exists yet. A strong result makes you a good candidate for that domain, but timing depends on current project needs.
What identity checks does AfterQuery use?
Persona verifies your phone by text code and your identity with a government ID and a selfie. Stripe runs separate checks for payouts. Your name must match your ID, including middle names, and should be identical on your AfterQuery account, Stripe and bank account.
How long does AfterQuery take to respond after the assessment?
AfterQuery publishes no timeline. Trustpilot reviewers in July 2026 described assessment reviews going about two months without feedback. Onboarding itself is estimated at 10 to 15 minutes.
