How to pass AI training qualification tests and assessments
How-to · 1 week ago
Most AI training assessments give you one attempt, forbid AI help and are graded against guidelines you were just handed. What Mercor, Outlier and DataAnnotation publish about their tests, and the habits that follow from it.
What the assessment is actually testing
If you want to pass an AI training assessment, start with what the platforms say they are measuring, because it is rarely raw knowledge. Mercor's assessment documentation lists four things: your domain expertise, how you approach real-world problems, your ability to follow instructions and manage ambiguity, and the quality and clarity of your written responses. It adds that two listings using the same assessment may score and weight it differently.
DataAnnotation says it reviews its Starter Assessment "for thoroughness and accuracy rather than speed". Outlier describes a two-stage shape: skill screenings during general onboarding, then project qualification, where you review the project guidelines and complete assessment tasks before any paid work.
This guide covers written assessments and qualification tasks. For AI interviews (micro1's Zara and Mercor's interviewer), read five things that decide an AI interview.
Assume you get one attempt
DataAnnotation is blunt: "You can only take the Starter Assessment once." Mercor states that most of its assessments permit a single submission and open in read-only mode once submitted. Mercor's AI interview is different, allowing up to three retakes, but treat every written test as final.
In practice that means:
- Do it in one sitting, in a quiet hour you have actually set aside. Mercor recommends completing assessments in a single session and backing up long written answers, because autosave "is not guaranteed in all instances".
- Do not rush. Mercor says most assessments have no strict time limit, and DataAnnotation says successful applicants spend more time on thorough answers.
- Only take tests that fit your background. Mercor's own first tip is to make sure the assessment matches your expertise.
The guidelines are the rubric
On a qualification task you are graded against the instructions you were just given, not against your general opinion of a good answer. Read them fully before the first task and keep them open; Mercor notes many of its forms support split-screen viewing for exactly this. Where a guideline and your instinct disagree, follow the guideline and explain your reasoning in writing if the task allows it.
Do not use AI to write it
Mercor's assessment page says that unless explicitly stated, you may not use AI or LLM tools to generate responses, copy from external sources, or collaborate with others, and some assessments disable copy and paste. Outlier's Community Guidelines require you to complete tasks by yourself without bots, automation or third-party tools unless an administrator requires them.
Contributors on r/outlier_ai have posted in September 2026 describing accounts deactivated shortly after a skill assessment, with an email citing a Community Guidelines violation. Those are individual reports and none states the actual cause, but they show the assessment is watched as closely as paid work.
After you submit
Mercor states that feedback exists only for some assessments, arrives by email when it does, and that its support team will not give out scores. A pass is also not a job: see how to get started for the wait that follows.

Questions
- Can I retake an AI training assessment?
- Usually not. DataAnnotation states its Starter Assessment can be taken once, with no retakes. Mercor states most of its assessments allow a single submission and open read-only afterwards. Mercor's AI interview is the exception: it allows up to three retakes, and a practice interview that does not affect your applications.
- Can I use ChatGPT to help with an assessment?
- Not unless the platform explicitly allows it. Mercor's assessment page says you may not use AI or LLM tools to generate responses unless stated otherwise, and some assessments disable copy and paste. Outlier's Community Guidelines require you to complete tasks yourself without bots, automation or third-party tools unless an administrator requires them.
- How long do AI training assessments take?
- DataAnnotation says most Starter Assessments take about an hour and specialised ones one to two hours. Outlier puts general onboarding, including skill screenings, at 30 to 90 minutes, with project-specific assessment tasks after that. Mercor says most of its assessments have no strict time limit.
