AI training jobs for students: who takes them and what they pay

Overview · Today

Few AI training jobs are written for students, because most platforms pay for finished credentials. From the 761 listings on this site: the student and recent-graduate roles that exist, what entry-level work really pays, where Handshake AI fits, and the visa rules international students need to check first.

Where students fit

AI training jobs for students are thin on the ground, because platforms mostly pay for credentials and a degree in progress usually is not one yet. Of the 761 listings on this site on 12 October 2026, two name students in the title and 76 are marked entry level. The entry-level filter is the place to start.

The listings written for students

micro1's AI Training Data Contributor (College Students) is physical data collection. You film household chores from a head-mounted phone so robotics models can learn what the tasks look like. It pays $10–15 per hour of accepted footage, which is not the same as per hour worked, and it is open only in 39 named US states. California and New York are among the eleven left out.

The Medical Evaluation Specialist listing takes medical students alongside residents and physicians. You write exam-style questions that frontier models get wrong and source every answer to guidelines or literature. The band is $40–90 an hour, paid per accepted task.

Recent graduates have micro1's Evaluation Specialist (Recent Grad), the same question-writing loop on any subject you can research well, at $20–60 an hour per task with a weekly minimum the ad does not quantify.

What entry-level work pays

73 of the entry-level listings quote an hourly rate, and their median midpoint is $47.50. That number flatters the work. Voice-cloning and data-licensing projects pull it up, and they pay for something you own (your voice, your face, your chat history) more than for skill. 21 of the 73 pay under $20 an hour, mostly video recording and basic annotation, and 17 entry-level listings are open to US residents only.

Handshake AI

Handshake, the careers network many US universities use, runs the Handshake AI fellowship. Its programme page says "you must be based in the U.S. and have a valid work authorization that can be supported by Handshake" and that no AI experience is required. Handshake's introduction to the programme describes it as open to US-based bachelor's, master's and doctoral students and graduates, and says Handshake "does not sponsor or facilitate school credit" through it. On 12 October the programme page listed its AI Evaluation Specialist role at up to $17 an hour, with specialist roles going higher. Matching, pay rules and the full eligibility list are in our Handshake AI fellowship guide.

If you are on an F-1 visa

Read the platform's policy before you apply. Mercor's F-1 page says it will engage students on pre- or post-completion OPT once the school's DSO has approved it, and on CPT where the work is integral to the curriculum and authorised by the school. Pre-completion OPT work must stay under 20 hours a week. Mercor does not engage contractors on STEM OPT and will not sign a Form I-983. Handshake's programme page also says STEM OPT is not supported. Your international student office has the final say.

Making a degree in progress count

The better-paid student work is specialised: medicine, as above, or a second language, where Spanish, Dutch or Japanese can matter more than your year of study. Our bilingual guide covers how language changes pay, and AI training jobs for beginners covers the platforms that take people with no track record.

Questions

Can college students get AI training jobs?
Yes, but few listings are written for them. On 12 October 2026, two of the 761 listings on this site named students in the title: a micro1 video data role for US college students at $10 to $15 per hour of accepted footage, and a micro1 medical question-writing role open to medical students at $40 to $90 an hour. 76 listings were marked entry level.
Can F-1 students do AI training work?
Sometimes. Mercor's F-1 policy accepts students on approved pre- or post-completion OPT and on CPT authorised by the school, with pre-completion OPT kept under 20 hours a week. Mercor does not engage contractors on STEM OPT, and Handshake AI says STEM OPT is not supported. Check with your international student office before accepting work.
Does Handshake AI give school credit?
No. Handshake's introduction to the programme says it does not sponsor or facilitate school credit through the Handshake AI Fellowship.
