CrowdGen and Appen: how they relate and how to get work
Platform comparison · Today
CrowdGen and Appen are one company seen from two sides: Appen is the ASX-listed data business, and CrowdGen is the platform its contributors sign up and work through. This guide covers how to get in, what CrowdGen publishes about pay and payment, and what Appen's half-year results for 2026 say about where its work is coming from.
One company, two names
If you search for CrowdGen and Appen, you are looking at the same business from two sides. Appen is the AI training data company, founded in Sydney in 1996 and listed on the Australian Securities Exchange as APX, according to its About page. CrowdGen is where its contributors work. The CrowdGen FAQ puts it in one line: "CrowdGen is the contributor platform of Appen, a publicly traded data company." Appen's own contributors page opens the CrowdGen site, and the footer reads "CrowdGen by Appen".
Appen sells to AI developers, and CrowdGen is where you apply, qualify and do the tasks. Our Appen company page covers the platform's history and what contributors report about it.
How to get work on CrowdGen
CrowdGen describes four steps. You apply and get verified, it matches you to projects in your domain, you contribute (evaluating, annotating, generating and refining content), and you build a quality record as you earn. The FAQ adds two things worth knowing before you start:
- Most projects have a qualification process. You start earning once you pass it, and passing is per project.
- You can join as many projects as you have time for, and most do not need technical skills, only expertise in your field.
CrowdGen also states that it will never ask you to pay to join a project. Anyone charging a fee, or selling a ready-made account, is not CrowdGen.
Being accepted does not mean work arrives at once. Matching depends on projects needing your profile, which our guide to accepted but no tasks explains. Running CrowdGen alongside other platforms, as in applying to several platforms at once, is one way to cover the quiet spells.
What CrowdGen says about pay
The homepage advertises "$100+/hr" as its top hourly pay, with the caveat that the rate "is based on location and skills". The same page lists a ceiling for each field: up to $95 an hour for linguists, $150 for software engineers, $160 for accounting experts, $400 for legal experts and $450 for medical clinicians. These are maximums, and CrowdGen publishes no typical rate for any of them.
On payment, CrowdGen says most earnings are stated in US dollars and paid in your local currency, withdrawn by bank transfer, PayPal, Payoneer, Airtm and other methods. It claims more than 500,000 contributors paid.
We have no Appen or CrowdGen listings on this site at the moment, so we cannot compare these ceilings with real project rates. For language work elsewhere, see language jobs.
Where Appen's business stands
Appen's half-year results for 2026, released to the ASX on 27 August 2026, show a company split in two. Group revenue rose 17 percent to $119.9 million. Appen China grew 80 percent to $76.2 million, while Appen Global fell 27 percent to $43.7 million, which Appen puts down to "lower volumes from traditional work, not yet fully offset by growth in new areas".
For contributors, the useful part is where Appen says the new work is coming from: speech and relevance, which it has long done, plus coding, STEM, finance and robotics. The same report describes about $12 million a year in cost cuts from using AI in Appen Global's operations. Appen does not say how either change affects task volume for individual contributors.
