AI training jobs in the UK: pay, platforms and tax basics

Country guide · Today

21 listings on this site name the UK and five are open only to UK residents, all from Mercor. What AI training jobs in the UK pay, which platforms post them, and the HMRC basics: the £1,000 trading allowance, registering for Self Assessment and the January deadline.

What is open in the UK

On 12 October 2026 this site had 761 listings, and AI training jobs in the UK fall into two groups. 21 listings name the UK as an eligible country, and you can see them on the UK listings page. Another 595 name no country at all, so the listing itself does not shut you out.

Both large platforms accept UK residents. The UK is on Mercor's supported countries page, and it is not among the 21 countries and regions micro1's experts page says it cannot hire from.

The UK-only roles

Five listings are open only in the UK, all from Mercor:

RolePay per hour
UK-based data engineering experts$140–200
UK-based MBB and top-tier strategy consulting experts$140–200
Molecular biology expert (UK)$70–105
Voice actor, Northern UK accent$50–100
Voice actor, UK English$50–100

The other 16 share the UK with other countries. The best paid are four micro1 executive presentation review roles (consulting, finance, data science and software engineering) at $150–350 an hour, open in the US, UK and Canada. The lowest is micro1's car-mounted 360 video recorder role at $15–20.

The median midpoint across the 21 is $90 an hour, against $70 for every hourly listing on the site. AI training pay by country shows that several Mercor templates pay the same band in the US and the UK.

Getting paid

UK residents are well covered. PayPal's payouts table lists the UK as fully localised. Wise lets UK residents hold a balance. Mercor's payout policy names Stripe as its main method, and Stripe's Global Payouts list pays the UK in pounds by local bank transfer. Rates are quoted in US dollars, so the pound amount moves with the exchange rate.

Tax basics

GOV.UK's working for yourself page says you are likely to be trading if you are paid for a service you provide.

HMRC's trading allowance guidance gives up to £1,000 a tax year tax free. If your gross trading income is £1,000 or less you may not have to tell HMRC, though there are cases where you must. Above £1,000 you can deduct the allowance instead of your actual expenses.

If you need to send a return and have not sent one before, GOV.UK's deadlines page says you must tell HMRC by 5 October after the tax year ends. For 2025 to 2026 that date was 5 October 2026. If you register after it, HMRC sends a return deadline three months from its letter, but the tax is still due by 31 January 2027. Online returns are due by the same date. Check if you need to send a tax return before you register.

A US platform may also ask for a tax form during onboarding; W-9 vs W-8BEN explains which.
