Can AI training work replace a full-time salary?

Overview · 1 week ago

For most people, no: most AI training roles are contract work sized for 20 hours a week or fewer, with no benefits and pay that often depends on output. A few are genuine full-time placements. What the 699 listings on this site say about hours, contracts and the arithmetic.

The short answer

For most people, AI training work does not replace a full-time salary on its own, and the listings say as much when you read their terms. A small number of roles are built as full-time placements; the rest are contract work sized as a side income. This is what the 699 listings on this site show as of 29 September 2026.

Most roles are sized for part-time hours

Only 114 of the 699 listings state weekly hours. Of those, 77 cap out at 20 hours a week or fewer. The median stated range tops out at 20 hours.

Twenty-three listings ask for 40 hours a week. Twenty of them are Mercor roles employed on a W-2 through a separate staffing company rather than as a contractor, and 14 of those are six-month, hybrid placements with an AI lab in the San Francisco Bay Area, where you must live or relocate at your own cost. The Finance Domain Expert is typical: $60–100 an hour, which the listing works out at roughly $125,000–208,000 a year. That is a real full-time job, but it is a fixed-term one in one region.

The only salaried roles on the board are five micro1 research positions at $200,000–320,000 base, with benefits. They are staff jobs at an AI company rather than training work in the usual sense.

The arithmetic, and why it is optimistic

The median hourly listing advertises $70 an hour. At 20 hours a week that is $1,400 a week before tax, and at 40 hours $2,800. Treat both as a ceiling, for four reasons the listings themselves give:

  • Contractor status. 636 of the 699 listings are contract engagements. There is no paid leave, no sick pay and no employer pension or health cover, and on most platforms nobody withholds your tax.
  • Pay by output. 128 hourly listings say pay is per task or output-based, so a slow week or rejected work lowers your real rate.
  • Quotas and gaps. 27 listings mention a weekly minimum number of tasks. Projects also end: Mercor's UK data engineering project, for example, runs four weeks at 40 hours and may be shortened or extended.
  • The rate depends on the field. Language and audio listings have a median near $28 an hour, so the same 20 hours is closer to $560 a week.

Who comes closest

People with a credential the labs are short of. Physicians, attorneys and senior finance professionals see listings well above $100 an hour, and a few of those listings are the 40-hour placements above. What moves you up the pay ladder is mostly the credential, not the hours.

For everyone else, working across two or three platforms means one project ending does not end your income. Mercor and micro1 carry most listings here; how you actually get paid covers payouts and tax.

Before you quit anything

Track what you actually earn per hour worked, not what listings advertise, over a few months. Budget for your own tax, time off and health cover. If the numbers still work after that, you have your answer.
