Accepted but no tasks: why it happens on AI training platforms
How-to · 1 week ago
Being accepted on Outlier, DataAnnotation, micro1 or Handshake AI and then seeing no tasks is common, and the platforms say so in their own help pages. The four causes they name, what workers report, and what you can change.
Accepted is not the same as assigned
Being accepted and then finding no tasks is the most common complaint in this field, and the platforms are more candid about it than their sign-up pages suggest. micro1 states that certification "does not guarantee immediate placement". Handshake AI says projects launch "on a rolling basis according to partner demand", so "there is no fixed timeline for receiving a project invitation." DataAnnotation's FAQ says: "If you haven't heard from us or received any assignments, it likely means your application is still under review or hasn't been accepted yet."
Acceptance puts you in a pool. Work arrives when a project needs someone with your profile.
The four causes the platforms name
1. No current demand for your skills. DataAnnotation says work availability "depends on both the demand for your skills and your past performance", and that workers are added to projects "based on expertise and performance." Outlier warns that available projects "may not always match your specific field."
2. Your declared expertise does not match what is running. Outlier says the areas of expertise you select during onboarding, and your skill screenings, are used to match you with projects. One r/outlier_ai poster in September 2026 describes a month with no projects and only programming skills offered, despite having no coding background, and asks whether to rewrite their CV.
3. Quality. DataAnnotation states that "subpar or problematic contributions may result in loss of access to future projects." An empty dashboard after a period of steady work can mean this, though the platform will not usually tell you.
4. The project ended. Mercor says projects end for reasons including completion, scope changes or budget, and that this does not affect your standing unless tied to fraud or performance.
What workers report
These are individual accounts, not platform statements. On r/outlier_ai in September 2026, contributors describe running out of tasks on a project within days and seeing "No more sample tasks, check again later"; one August 2026 poster says their account went from 15 or more tasks a day to a single task type for three months. On r/DataAnnotationTech the same month, new workers describe ten days of qualifications with no project yet, or a few days of work and then nothing. What you can change
- Fix your declared expertise and CV so matching sees what you actually do. micro1 advises keeping your profile current and certifying additional skills.
- Take more qualifications. DataAnnotation says passing unlocks further specialist assessments for other projects; Mercor says assessments are reused across listings.
- Keep work quality high on what you do get, since performance feeds future availability.
- Do not wait on one queue. See applying to several platforms at once and how to get started.

Questions
- Does an empty dashboard mean I have been banned?
- Not necessarily. DataAnnotation says a lack of assignments may mean your application is still under review or was not accepted, and that work depends on demand for your skills and past performance. micro1 and Handshake AI both state that placement depends on project availability.
- How long until I get my first task?
- No platform publishes a figure. Handshake AI states there is no fixed timeline for a project invitation because projects launch on a rolling basis according to partner demand. micro1 states certification does not guarantee immediate placement.
- Will declining project invitations on Outlier reduce my work?
- Outlier's FAQ says you are not required to accept any invitations and that declining will not affect the number of projects made available to you.
