Outlier

Outlier is Scale AI's platform for freelance AI trainers: you write hard prompts, build grading rubrics, and rank model answers in your own field. Fully remote with no minimum hours, and you see a project's rate before you start it, but Outlier requires at least an associate degree, and publishes no list of the countries it operates in.

How it works

Outlier describes itself as a platform operated by Scale AI that connects experts with leading AI companies to provide the human feedback that improves language models. The work is model training rather than data labelling. Outlier names three common task types on its own homepage: writing a challenging prompt (a question in your field hard enough to make a model answer incorrectly, together with the correct answer) creating grading rubrics, and rating and ranking model answers. Which projects you see depends on the expertise you declare, and Outlier states plainly that available projects vary and may not always match your field.

Screening is selective by design, and Outlier publishes a hard eligibility bar that catches a lot of applicants out: its FAQ states you need at least an associate degree, with specific projects requiring a bachelor's, master's or PhD depending on complexity. To apply you need a valid ID and a mobile phone from your country of residence, a current resume, and a LinkedIn profile showing your education and work history. Outlier reviews each resume against the minimum requirements for the domain you applied to.

Outlier puts onboarding at 30 to 90 minutes by its own estimate: create the account, select your areas of expertise, complete skill screenings so projects can be matched to you, and verify your identity. Project-specific onboarding follows and varies by project: you review the guidelines and complete assessment tasks before any paid work begins.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Outlier states you always see the tasking rate before you start a project, which is the exception rather than the rule in this market
  • Genuinely no minimum hours, and Outlier states that declining a project invitation does not reduce the invitations you get afterwards
  • Outlier advertises free access to paid frontier models while you work
  • Students of legal working age are explicitly allowed, and the work is designed to sit alongside another job
  • Outlier advertises quality-based rewards on top of a project's base rate

Less good:

  • The associate degree minimum is a hard gate, and it rules out applicants who would be perfectly capable of the actual work
  • Screening is competitive by design; onboarding, skill assessments and project qualification all happen before you earn anything
  • Contributors posting in r/outlier_ai through 2025 and 2026 report sustained rate compression, with projects restructured to noticeably lower baseline rates than they carried a year earlier. Outlier's own materials do not address rate changes on continuing projects
  • The same contributors, and reviewers on Indeed, describe sudden task droughts, projects ending without warning and stretches with no work available. Outlier does not publish anything about task supply
  • Project availability is not guaranteed to match your field, and projects end when the customer's need ends
  • Independent contractor status: no benefits, no notice period, and your own tax to manage
  • No visa sponsorship, and Outlier puts the burden on you to confirm your own right to work

About this page

Facts above come from Outlier's own homepage and FAQ at outlier.ai, last checked 6 September 2026.

Outlier states that rates vary by expertise, project complexity and location, and that you see the tasking rate before starting any project. It publishes no platform-wide figure, so the typical-pay fields on this page are empty rather than averaged across projects that have nothing in common: the rate you should trust is the one on the project in front of you.

Outlier's FAQ does not publish a list of eligible countries, so country eligibility is left open on this page rather than guessed at. Confirm your own before investing an evening in onboarding.

Worker reports come from r/outlier_ai and from contractor review sites, and are attributed in the sentence that makes the claim rather than folded into the facts on this page.
