Skills
  • legal research
  • legal writing
  • contract law
  • constitutional law
  • intellectual property
  • ai evaluation

What you'll do

You write the hard questions. AfterQuery uses this role to build legal reasoning challenges for AI training: case studies and scenarios across contract law, constitutional law, intellectual property and other areas, designed so a model has to interpret and apply a principle rather than recite it. Then you read the model's answers and say where the logic breaks or the law is misapplied.

Two halves, then: authoring (making a question difficult in the right way) and grading (written feedback on consistency and adherence to legal principles). You also work with a team of legal and technical experts to tune how hard each question is, so expect your drafts to be reviewed and revised.

Who fits

  • A Juris Doctor from an accredited law school (stated as required)
  • Real experience in legal practice, research or academia, across more than one discipline
  • Strong analytical and written communication skills; the output of this job is mostly prose
  • Preferred: several years of practice or substantial legal research, publications, policy work or legal tech involvement, and some familiarity with AI-driven legal tools

The application form asks for bar admission but marks it optional. The ad does not name a country or jurisdiction.

What it pays

The board shows $138/hour and the ad text gives no range, so that is the figure. The ad does not say whether work is paid by the hour or per task, how many hours a week are available, or when payment arrives; the listing does not publish its payment terms. The AfterQuery company page covers the payout cycle the company describes in its help centre.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • A high stated hourly figure for a role that asks for a JD and nothing narrower than general legal breadth
  • Remote and asynchronous, on your own schedule
  • Bar admission is optional on the form, which helps academics and attorneys on a career break

Less good:

  • No hours, volume or payment terms in the ad, so you cannot tell how much work to expect
  • Question writing is a specific skill; strong practitioners can still find it slow at first
  • The ad dates from January 2026 and is still open, which suggests a standing pool rather than a single project
  • AfterQuery's help centre describes an unpaid, one-attempt assessment and ID verification before you are matched to projects
