Legal AI training jobs: tasks, pay and who qualifies

Overview · 1 week ago

Legal AI training jobs pay lawyers to write, grade and review the legal work AI models produce. From the 56 legal listings on this site: the three kinds of task, what they pay (median midpoint $110 an hour), which credentials matter and who is hiring.

What legal AI training work is

AI labs want models that can draft a clause, answer a regulatory question or spot a weak argument the way a practising lawyer would. Legal AI training jobs pay lawyers to supply that judgement. On 29 September 2026 this site listed 70 roles under Law, Policy & Security, out of 699 listings in total. 56 of them are legal work; the rest cover defence writing, emergency dispatch, privacy and political forecasting.

The legal listings fall into three kinds of task.

Writing the test. Mercor's senior-lawyer series asks you to build a scenario, the reference work a strong lawyer would produce (memos, filings, markups) and a rubric that separates real legal reasoning from confident surface output. Its Law Experts listing, aimed at in-house counsel and AmLaw 100 lawyers with Fortune 500 clients, pays $110–150 an hour with a 20-hour weekly minimum.

Grading against someone else's rubric. micro1's contract-redlining family runs simulated negotiations and scores how a model handles the same contract. The Junior Transactional Attorney listing applies grading criteria rather than writing them, and pays $70–90 for one to three years of transactional experience.

Review and quality control. micro1's Document Reviewer checks privacy-sensitive documents after redaction or transformation, at $31–60. It is the closest thing to entry-level legal work on the board.

What it pays

All 56 legal listings quote an hourly rate, from $20 to $400. The median midpoint is $110 an hour, and most listings sit between roughly $95 and $130. The top of the range belongs to micro1's BigLaw family (BigLaw Lawyers and its practice-specific variants), advertised at $140–400 and gated on experience at a Vault Law 100 firm. The band is wide and the ads do not say how you are placed within it, so plan around the floor.

Mercor's lawyer listings cluster more tightly, mostly at $90–100 for regulatory, IP, litigation and corporate work. 16 of the 56 listings describe pay as per task or output-based, which makes the hourly figure a projection of how fast you work. How you actually get paid explains the difference.

Who qualifies

This is licensed-professional work. Of the 56 legal listings, 35 mention a JD and 39 ask for bar admission, an active licence or good standing; 43 are rated senior. Two things move you up the pay range more than anything else: a named firm tier (Vault 100, AmLaw 100) and a specific practice area. The listings name M&A, ISDAs and derivatives, IP and patent prosecution, immigration, family law, bankruptcy and regulatory work.

Most of the work is US law. 11 of the 56 listings are limited to US residents, and many of the others assume US practice even when they are open worldwide. Mercor's regulatory law listing also has an international track built on EU and UK frameworks.

Two companies post all of it: micro1 (42 listings) and Mercor (14). AI experience is at most a plus. What both test for is the ability to write down why an answer is wrong, since a rubric or a scored critique is the actual deliverable.

Where to start

Browse the full legal and policy filter and look for your practice area in the titles. Early in your career, the junior redlining and document review listings are the realistic way in. Senior lawyers should compare Mercor's authoring roles, which pay a narrower band, with micro1's wider ranges.
