What you'll do
You build the test material, not the infrastructure. AfterQuery asks cloud engineers to write realistic scenarios that run from architecture design through incident response, then write reference answers that explain the reasoning behind each decision. You also grade model output for correctness, security and cost efficiency.
The distinctive part is the last duty: flagging configurations that read as plausible but would fail or overspend in production. That is a review skill more than a writing one, and it rewards people who have been paged for exactly that kind of mistake.
Who fits
- At least 2 years of professional cloud engineering on AWS, Azure or GCP
- Hands-on infrastructure as code with Terraform, CloudFormation or similar
- Depth in at least one area such as networking, containers, serverless or cost optimization
- Clear written English; the reference answers are documents, and the reasoning is the deliverable
- Able to commit at least 10 hours a week
- Preferred: a cloud certification (AWS Solutions Architect, Azure Administrator, GCP Professional), Kubernetes experience, or multi-cloud and large migration work
What it pays
The board headlines $125/hr, while the ad's own contract terms give a range of $85 to $165/hr. The ad says your rate is set from your experience and is not negotiated down after you start. Pay is weekly through Stripe.
How hiring works
The ad describes a five-minute application (resume plus a few structured questions), a resume review against a published rubric with a decision for every application, a possible written assessment, onboarding (contractor agreement, Stripe, platform access), and a project match that usually lands within a week of onboarding.
Worth knowing
Good:
- A high band for work that uses day-to-day cloud judgment
- Fully remote and async, with no fixed hours and a minimum of 10 hours a week but no maximum
- The ad states no screen recording, no keystroke monitoring and no idle timers
- Ongoing project work rather than one-off task batches
Less good:
- A weekly 10-hour minimum is a real commitment
- Scenario authoring and grading are writing-heavy; if you dislike documenting your reasoning, this will wear
- Project matching is not guaranteed on a date; "usually within a week" is the ad's wording
