What you'll do
You write the geoscience problems and the answer keys that models are tested against, then grade what the models produce.
- Author realistic scenarios that run from field observation through interpretation, the kind a working geologist reasons through
- Write reference answers that show the geological reasoning, with processes and timescales weighed
- Grade model output on geoscience and climate questions for physical accuracy and sensible handling of uncertainty
- Flag explanations that read fluently but get the earth science wrong, the errors only a trained geoscientist would notice
The ad frames the work as ongoing project work rather than single task batches, and says your specialty is where you stay.
Who fits
- An advanced degree in geology, earth science or a closely related field
- At least 2 years of research, industry or field experience in the geosciences
- Depth in an area such as sedimentology, hydrology, geophysics, volcanology or climate science
- Clear written English, since the job is turning scientific judgment into reasoning someone else can learn from
- Able to commit at least 10 hours a week
Preferred: a PhD or professional geologist licensure, GIS, remote sensing or geospatial modelling skills, and energy, mining, environmental consulting or geological survey experience. The application form asks optionally for a Professional Geologist (PG / GIT) credential.
What it pays
The board headlines $85/hr. The ad's own contract section gives a range of $60 to $110/hr, set from your experience and, the ad says, not negotiated down after you start. Payment is weekly via Stripe. Working hours are your own: fully remote and async, a minimum of 10 hours a week and no maximum, with no screen recording, keystroke monitoring or idle timers. You are an independent contractor.
How hiring works
The ad lists five steps: a roughly five-minute application (resume plus a few structured questions), a resume review against a published rubric with a decision for every applicant, a possible written assessment for further placement, onboarding (contractor agreement, Stripe, platform access), and a project match in your specialty, usually within a week of onboarding.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Work stays in your specialty and is judged on scientific reasoning, not output volume
- No fixed hours and no monitoring software
- Stated weekly pay and a rate set from experience
- A wide range of qualifying subfields, from sedimentology to climate science
Less good:
- The 10-hour weekly minimum is a real commitment for anyone with a full-time job
- The rate band is wide, so the figure you get depends on how your experience is read
- A written assessment may be required, and AfterQuery's help centre says assessments are unpaid and cannot be retaken
- A project match is "usually within a week" of onboarding, not guaranteed
