What you'll do

AfterQuery wants applied economists to do the kind of work they would do in a policy shop or analytics team, with the output feeding AI training and evaluation. You use real datasets to build empirical models, run causal and statistical analyses, and write up what you found.

Expect regression, panel data and causal inference work, plus the unglamorous parts that make a model trustworthy: constructing variables carefully, running robustness checks and sensitivity analysis, and documenting every assumption and analytical choice so someone else can follow it.

Projects are assigned one at a time and run over roughly the next two to three weeks, fully asynchronous. The ad expects 10–20 hours a week on the projects you accept.

Who fits

  • 1–3 years of professional experience in economics, econometrics, policy analysis or a related quantitative field
  • A Master's degree in Economics, Econometrics, Public Policy or a related quantitative field
  • Independent problem-solving on technical tasks
  • At least one first-author publication or first-author equivalent work, which is a stricter bar than most listings on this board
  • Preferred: you have TA'd courses in causal inference, econometrics or other programming-heavy statistics classes, with applied machine learning and empirical analysis

What it pays

The board headlines $80/hour. The ad's own text says project-based pay starts at an estimated $60/hour and can reach $100/hour, so this listing records $60–100/hour. Where you land inside that band is not explained in the ad. The listing does not publish its payment terms (schedule, method, minimum hours); the AfterQuery company page covers how payouts normally work.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Real datasets and real modelling decisions, not generic annotation
  • Fully remote and asynchronous, with a stated 10–20 hour weekly range
  • A published-research requirement keeps the pool small and the work technical
  • Open to people with 1–3 years of experience, not only senior researchers

Less good:

  • The first-author publication requirement will rule out many otherwise strong candidates
  • Work is assigned project by project, so steady hours are not promised
  • The pay is described as an estimate and "starting at" figure, so confirm your rate before accepting a project
  • AfterQuery's help centre describes an unpaid, one-attempt assessment and identity verification before project matching
