What you'll do

The ad describes hands-on spreadsheet engineering: building and maintaining complex Excel models (financial models, forecasting tools, scenario analyses, operational dashboards), writing advanced formulas, pivot tables, Power Query workflows and VBA or macro automation, cleaning and structuring large datasets, and producing visually polished dashboards and reports for business stakeholders. You also document spreadsheet logic, assumptions and methods so the work is reproducible.

The ad does not mention AI training or evaluation, and it does not say who the end customer is. It describes project work for an early-stage Y Combinator-backed company, so confirm the project type during the assessment.

Who qualifies

  • Demonstrable expert-level Excel proficiency, including advanced formulas, Power Query, pivot tables and VBA
  • A proven track record delivering complex spreadsheet models or data tools in a professional setting
  • Attention to detail and the ability to work independently on technical and analytical tasks
  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in Finance, Accounting, Data Science, Business, Mathematics or a related field

Preferred: financial modeling, FP&A or business intelligence experience; familiarity with add-ins and integrations (Power BI, Solver); automating Excel with Python (openpyxl, xlwings) or VBA; and a background in teaching or training others.

What it pays

The AfterQuery board shows $60/hr. The ad text only says "Exceptional Pay" and gives no range, so $60/hr is the figure used here. Expected commitment is 5 to 20 hours a week for the projects you accept, over the next 2 to 3 weeks, asynchronous, assigned project by project. The ad does not publish its payment terms; the company page describes how AfterQuery pays contractors in general.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • A low minimum commitment (5 hours a week) compared with other AfterQuery roles
  • Flexible, asynchronous schedule
  • Skills that transfer directly to finance and business roles

Less good:

  • The ad gives no pay detail beyond the board figure
  • Short engagements assigned project by project, with no stated promise of continuing work
  • The ad does not describe an application process; AfterQuery's help centre describes an unpaid one-attempt assessment and ID verification
  • A degree is stated as required
