Skills
  • history
  • source analysis
  • historiography
  • archival research
  • academic writing
  • ai evaluation

What you'll do

You build and grade the history questions that AI labs use to test how well a model reasons about the past. The work is method-first: you write scenarios that need source criticism or a choice between competing causal explanations, then write the reference answer showing what the sources support and what they cannot.

You also grade model answers. The ad is specific about the failure it wants caught: narratives that sound confident but flatten the evidence, invent causation, or project the present onto the past. That is a historian's instinct more than a fact-checker's, so expect the job to reward judgment over trivia recall.

Who fits

  • An advanced degree in history or a closely related field
  • At least two years of teaching, research, archival or published historical work
  • Depth in a period or region, backed by real primary source experience; any period or region is welcome
  • Clear written English, since the reference answers are written arguments rather than short labels
  • Able to commit at least 10 hours a week

Preferred: a PhD and peer reviewed publications, archival research or public history experience, and reading knowledge of relevant research languages.

What it pays

The ad states $50 to $100 an hour, set from your experience and not negotiated down after you start. The board headlines $75 an hour, which sits in the middle of that range. Pay is weekly via Stripe. The minimum is 10 hours a week with no maximum, there is no screen recording, keystroke monitoring or idle timer, and you work as an independent contractor on ongoing project work rather than single task batches.

How hiring works

The ad describes five steps: apply (about five minutes, a resume and a few structured questions), resume review against a published rubric, a possible written assessment for further placement, onboarding (sign the contractor agreement, connect Stripe, get platform access), then a project match in your specialty, usually within a week of onboarding.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Work stays in your specialty and is judged on rigor, not volume
  • Fully remote and async, with no fixed hours
  • A stated rate range, weekly pay and a no-monitoring statement
  • Open to any period or region

Less good:

  • At least 10 hours a week is expected, which rules out casual dipping in
  • Your place in the range is set from your experience, and the ad does not say where a given applicant will land
  • A written assessment may be required, and the ad does not say whether it is paid; AfterQuery's wider help centre describes assessments as unpaid and one attempt (see the company page)
  • An advanced degree is a hard requirement
