What you'll do
AfterQuery is hiring practising analysts to build the detection and incident response scenarios that AI labs use to test model judgment. Day to day you will:
- Author realistic security scenarios, from alert triage through incident response and remediation
- Write reference answers that spell out the investigative reasoning behind each decision
- Grade model output for technical accuracy and operational soundness
- Flag guidance that reads as plausible but would weaken security posture
That last item is the interesting one: the value is in catching confident advice that a junior analyst might follow and an experienced one would not.
Who fits
Required:
- 2+ years in security operations, incident response or vulnerability management
- Hands-on experience with tooling such as SIEM, EDR and vulnerability scanners
- Depth in at least one area, for example detection engineering, threat hunting or GRC
- Clear written English for documenting investigative and remediation reasoning
- Able to commit at least 10 hours per week
Preferred: certifications such as Security+, CySA+, CISSP or GIAC; SOC leadership or incident commander experience; scripting or automation in Python or PowerShell.
What it pays
The ad states $90 to $135/hr, and says the rate is set from your experience and not negotiated down after you start. The board headlines $113/hr, which sits inside that range. Pay is weekly via Stripe. The minimum is 10 hours per week with no maximum, so you can scale up or down week to week.
The ad also states there is no screen recording, no keystroke monitoring and no idle timers, and that you work as an independent contractor on ongoing project work rather than single task batches.
How hiring works
Per the ad: a roughly five-minute application (resume plus a few structured questions); a resume review against a published rubric, with a decision on every application; possibly a written assessment for further placement; onboarding (sign the contractor agreement, connect Stripe, get platform access); then a project match, usually within a week of onboarding.
Worth knowing
Good:
- A stated hourly range with weekly payment and no activity monitoring
- Ongoing project work rather than one-off task batches
- Hours you set yourself, fully remote and async
- Every application gets a decision, according to the ad
Less good:
- A 10-hour weekly minimum, which rules out very occasional work
- The top of the range goes to experience, so expect the bottom half if you are near the 2-year bar
- Matching to live work is not guaranteed on a date, only "usually within a week" of onboarding
- Written reasoning is the product, so this suits people who like documenting their decisions
