What you'll do
The premise of this ad is that models are made of language, so linguists are well placed to find where a model's command of it breaks. You author scenarios that test real analysis, from syntactic ambiguity to semantic entailment to phonological pattern, and write the reference analysis behind each: the data, the generalization and the exceptions.
You also grade model output for analytical accuracy and for honest handling of the data. The failure the ad wants flagged is the analysis that reads plausible but misparses the sentence or mislabels the phenomenon.
Who fits
- An advanced degree in linguistics or a closely related field
- At least two years of research, teaching or applied linguistics work
- Depth in a subfield; the ad lists syntax, semantics, phonology, morphology, sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics, "and beyond"
- Strong written English, because technical analysis has to be made clear without flattening it
- Able to commit at least 10 hours a week
Preferred: a PhD and peer reviewed publications, computational linguistics or corpus methods experience, and fieldwork or documentation of understudied languages. The ad describes the ideal analyst as someone who reasons from data to generalization and can say what would falsify their own account.
What it pays
The ad states $50 to $100 an hour, set from your experience and not negotiated down after you start. The board headlines $75 an hour. Pay is weekly via Stripe, with a 10-hour weekly minimum and no maximum. There is no screen recording, keystroke monitoring or idle timer. The engagement is independent contractor work on ongoing projects rather than single task batches.
How hiring works
Per the ad: a roughly five minute application (resume plus a few structured questions), resume review against a published rubric, a written assessment you may be asked to take for further placement, onboarding (contractor agreement, Stripe, platform access), and a project match in your specialty, usually within a week of onboarding.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Subfield-agnostic: the ad welcomes any area of linguistics
- Remote, async and flexible week to week
- Weekly Stripe pay and an explicit no-monitoring statement
- Corpus and fieldwork experience are named as preferred, so applied profiles are not an afterthought
Less good:
- A 10-hour weekly minimum
- An advanced degree is required
- Where you land in the $50 to $100 range is set from your experience and not shown in advance
- The ad does not say whether the written assessment is paid; AfterQuery's help centre describes unpaid, single-attempt assessments (see the company page)
