What you'll do
You build evaluation material for AI models from the perspective of someone who prosecutes patents. Scenarios run from prior art analysis through claim drafting and office action responses. For each one you write a reference answer that explains both the legal and the technical reasoning, then grade model output for claim quality, procedural soundness and technical accuracy.
The point of the grading is to catch drafting that reads plausible but would fail at the USPTO, for example claims that look fine to a general reader but would draw a rejection.
Who fits
- USPTO registration as a patent agent or patent attorney (the role is titled for agents, but the requirement also admits attorneys)
- At least two years of patent prosecution experience
- Depth in claim drafting, office action responses and prior art analysis
- Clear written English for documenting reasoning
- Able to commit at least 10 hours a week
Preferred: an advanced degree in engineering or the sciences, experience across technology areas, and mentoring junior drafters. The application form asks which technical fields you prosecute in (required) and for your USPTO registration (optional).
What it pays
The board headlines $108/hr. The ad's contract section states $90 to $125/hr, paid weekly via Stripe, with the rate set from experience and not negotiated down later. The sister Patent Attorney Expert role is slightly higher, at $95 to $140/hr, while this one needs no law degree.
Worth knowing
Good:
- A credential-based role that rewards a technical background, not only legal training
- Remote and fully async, no fixed hours
- No screen recording, keystroke monitoring or idle timers, per the ad
- Ongoing project work rather than single task batches
Less good:
- A minimum of 10 hours a week
- Independent contractor status: no benefits, your own tax
- Scenarios are matched to your technical field, so a narrow specialty may see fewer projects; the ad does not say how many are available
- Hiring includes a resume review and a possible written assessment before onboarding and project matching
