What you'll do

You build physics questions that test reasoning, then check how well AI models answer them.

  • Design well-structured questions from undergraduate to advanced level that reward conceptual understanding over plug-in computation
  • Validate that each reference solution is right and tune the difficulty of the problem
  • Analyse model responses and give detailed feedback on clarity and scientific rigour

The ad describes this as remote, flexible, asynchronous work, and states that the goal is for AI systems to interpret and solve hard physics problems in line with current scientific principles.

Who fits

  • A completed Masters or PhD in physics or a related field such as astronomy, astrophysics or engineering physics
  • At least 2 years in academic research, teaching or applied physics
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to explain complex phenomena clearly

Preferred: publications, curriculum development or technical report writing; breadth across mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics and quantum mechanics; and some interdisciplinary or AI/ML exposure.

The application form is heavier than most on the board. It requires your institutional affiliation, a full list of published papers and your degree, so have those ready before you start.

What it pays

The board shows $65/hr and the ad gives no range, so that is the figure recorded. It mentions "potential performance-based incentives" without giving amounts. Payment terms and minimum hours are not published on this listing; the AfterQuery company page covers how AfterQuery pays contractors. At $65/hr this sits at the lower end of AfterQuery's STEM listings, which is worth weighing against the PhD-level bar.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Question writing and solution checking, work that rewards teaching experience
  • Fully remote and asynchronous
  • Open to Masters holders as well as PhDs

Less good:

  • Among the lower hourly figures for a PhD-level AfterQuery STEM role
  • The ad does not state weekly hours, payment schedule or how work is assigned
  • The full-publication-list requirement makes applying slower
  • AfterQuery's help centre describes an unpaid, one-attempt assessment and ID verification for its expert pools
