What you'll do
You write problems from your own desk. The ad asks for realistic quantitative finance problems drawn from signal research, backtesting, pricing and risk modelling, each worked through to a reference answer with the reasoning behind every step. You also catch the modelling mistakes that look reasonable but that only a practitioner would spot.
The ad is blunt about who this is for: practising quants with hands-on modelling experience. It says it is not looking for traders without a modelling role, software engineers or financial analysts focused on reporting.
Who fits
- A master's or PhD in mathematics, statistics, physics, financial engineering, economics or computer science
- At least 3 years full time as a quantitative researcher, quant analyst or risk modeller; internships and school do not count
- Hands-on experience with backtesting, pricing models, risk models or statistical time series
- Strong Python, R, C++ or MATLAB
- Able to commit at least 10 hours a week
- Preferred: hedge fund, trading firm, bank or asset manager experience, market or credit risk models (VaR, expected shortfall, PD/LGD), and clear written English for explaining a model step by step
What it pays
The board shows $115/hour and the ad text gives no range. The ad lists weekly pay via Stripe and says you set your own hours and scale up or down week to week, with a 10 hour weekly minimum in the requirements. It also says work is judged on quantitative judgment, not volume.
AfterQuery's separate Quantitative Analyst Expert listing is a lower bar (2 years, a degree or equivalent) at a higher board figure of $175/hour; read both before choosing which to apply for.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Work stays in your specialty and is graded on judgment, not output volume
- Weekly pay and self-set hours are stated in the ad
- A clear, narrow description of who qualifies
Less good:
- A strict bar: a graduate degree plus 3 years full time in a modelling role
- The 10 hour weekly minimum is a real commitment
- The ad does not describe the hiring process; AfterQuery's help centre describes an unpaid, one-attempt assessment and ID verification
