What you'll do
You write tax scenarios the way a practicing tax lawyer meets them, from structuring questions through controversy positions, and then test AI models against them. Each scenario carries a reference answer built from the code and regulations, with authorities cited and weighed. You grade model output for technical accuracy, authority support and whether the position would survive scrutiny.
The ad's stated target is positions that read confident but misapply the code or miss controlling authority. It also says tax reasoning is one of the most demanded benchmark areas in legal AI evaluation, which is presumably why this posting sits at the top of AfterQuery's law pay bands.
Who fits
- A JD and active bar admission in a US jurisdiction
- At least two years of tax practice at a firm, in house or in government
- Depth in a real tax area such as corporate, partnership, international, controversy or SALT
- Someone who reasons from the code and regulations, not from summaries
- Clear written English; able to commit at least 10 hours a week
Preferred: an LLM in Taxation or a CPA credential, transaction structuring or IRS controversy experience, and cross-border or state and local tax depth. The form has optional fields for bar admission and CPA.
What it pays
The board headlines $160/hr. The ad's contract section states $120 to $200/hr, paid weekly via Stripe, with the rate set from experience and not negotiated down after you start.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Remote and fully async with no fixed hours
- Work stays in your specialty and is judged on tax judgment, not billable volume
- No screen recording, keystroke monitoring or idle timers, per the ad
- Ongoing project work rather than single task batches
Less good:
- A minimum of 10 hours a week, no maximum
- Independent contractor status: no benefits, your own tax
- Tax specialties are narrow; the ad does not say which areas have the most open projects
- A resume review and a possible written assessment come before onboarding and project matching, usually within a week of onboarding
