What you'll do

MATLAB has one of the broadest user bases of any engineering tool, and this Mercor listing is aimed at the people who use it for real work: electrical, mechanical, control-systems and aerospace engineers running numerical computing, simulation, and signal or image processing.

The ad frames the role around access rather than tasks. You need MATLAB open on your own Windows PC and a screen that produces large, sharp screenshots. It does not say what you will be asked to do in the application, for whom, or for how long. The setup strongly resembles computer-use data collection (people demonstrating genuine workflows in desktop software so AI agents can learn them), but that is our inference, not the ad's wording. Ask in screening.

Because MATLAB is so widely taught, expect the "real-world experience" bar to be the filter. Scripts, toolboxes you use in your job, perhaps Simulink models if you have them: be ready to show you work in it, not just that you learned it.

Who fits

  • MATLAB installed and working on your own Windows PC today; Mercor provides no licence, VM or hardware
  • Professional, hands-on use of the kind engineers in electrical, mechanical, controls and aerospace fields have
  • A display that captures more than 2.5 megapixels, either one high-resolution screen (1440p at 16:9, 1600p at 16:10, a 3440-wide ultrawide, or a MacBook Pro 14"/16" panel) or two side-by-side monitors of 1920×1080 or better captured together

No degree, minimum years or country restriction appears in the ad.

What it pays

$45–55 per hour, Mercor's published band for its STEM application listings. Developer-tool listings in the same family pay $55–65 and operating-system and Office listings $60–70, so MATLAB sits in the middle-lower tier despite being demanding software.

Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise, based on services rendered.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Many engineers already have a MATLAB licence through home-use or personal plans, so the entry barrier may be lower than for niche tools
  • Fully remote on your own schedule
  • Weekly pay published upfront
  • 8 hires on the listing this month when we checked

Less good:

  • An employer-managed licence tied to a work laptop may not count as "your own PC"; check before applying
  • Tasks, hours and duration are not described
  • Projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
  • H-1B and STEM OPT candidates excluded
  • Contractor status: no benefits, your own tax

About this listing
