What you'll do
Mercor is adding chemical defence researchers to the red-team panel that tests how frontier AI models handle chemistry. The target is calibration: a model should answer a medic's countermeasure question or a responder's PPE question in full, and should decline the small set of requests that are genuinely about causing harm. A wrong refusal is scored as a failure, the same as a wrong answer.
Each task has three parts:
- Write one single-turn prompt from your field and label it benign, dual-use or adversarial
- Judge the model's reply against a defined policy standard
- Write the reference answer, with the technical reasoning that makes it correct
Of the chemistry roles on this panel, defence research sits closest to the dual-use line. Treatment, protection and decontamination knowledge is published, taught and needed by clinicians and responders, yet it describes the same agents a threat assessment does. The job is knowing which framing is routine professional practice and which is probing for something else, and explaining that call in writing.
Who fits
People who have worked chemical threats defensively inside an institution. The ad points to backgrounds like:
- Chemical defence research at USAMRICD, DoD, CDC or an allied national institute
- Toxicology of chemical warfare agents and medical countermeasure development
- Decontamination, protection and detection research
- CWC-related work: verification, destruction, designated laboratory analysis
- Consequence assessment and medical management of chemical exposure
Red-teaming experience is preferred rather than required. Expect a writing-heavy job: every judgment needs a rationale a non-specialist can follow, and Mercor asks for a sample or link (a paper, a technical report, expert witness work).
What it pays
$65–75 per task, Mercor's published figure and the same band as every other role on the chemistry panel. The ad does not say how long a task takes, so the hourly equivalent depends on how fast you can write a good prompt, grade a response and draft a reference answer. Time your first few before committing hours.
Payment schedule and visa eligibility are not published on this listing. Ask about both at onboarding.
Before you apply
The work must not draw on classified or export-controlled information, or on anything covered by an NDA or prepublication review. Many people in this field carry exactly those obligations; the ad says you can still apply if you declare them, and Mercor will scope the work around them. Be specific about them in your application.
You will spend long stretches reading and writing about misuse scenarios. Mercor says it briefs experts beforehand and that you can pause or step away at any point without penalty.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Directly uses defensive toxicology and countermeasure expertise that few annotation projects touch
- Clear welfare terms and a stated route for people with clearance or review obligations
- No country restriction published
Less good:
- Per-task pay with no stated task length
- Payment terms and eligibility are missing from the listing
- Sustained exposure to misuse scenarios in your own specialty
