Skills
  • civil engineering
  • structural analysis
  • geotechnical engineering
  • hydraulic modeling
  • construction management
  • rubric writing

What you'll do

This is task authoring for AI evaluation, pitched at major infrastructure. You build the scenarios a model is tested on, write the reference answer a senior engineer would produce, and then write the rubric that separates real engineering judgment from textbook recall.

The subject range is broad:

  • Disciplines: structural design and analysis, transportation and highway engineering, water resources and environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, and construction project management
  • Process: full design cycles, multi-stakeholder permitting and regulatory review, and public works delivery
  • Tools the scenarios assume: AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit, STAAD.Pro or ETABS, HEC-RAS, and enterprise project management platforms
  • Deliverables: reference design plans, engineering calculations, and technical narratives written for stakeholders and regulators

The distinctive part of this ad is the two standards tracks. Each "world" targets either a US track (ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC 360, AASHTO LRFD) or an International track (Eurocodes EN 1990 to 1998 and ISO). You can qualify for one or both, which makes this one of the few Mercor engineering listings that openly welcomes Eurocode practitioners.

Who fits

  • 5+ years as a civil engineer or engineering lead
  • Direct ownership of large infrastructure designs, permitting processes or construction delivery
  • A working understanding of how regulatory approval, environmental review (NEPA or an international equivalent) and public agency oversight actually run
  • A recognised credential is strongly preferred: US PE, or CEng, EUR ING or P.Eng
  • Prior rubric, training-curriculum or design documentation writing is a plus

The rubric work is the part most practising engineers underestimate. Writing down why a plausible answer is wrong (a load combination skipped, a permitting step assumed away) is slower than doing the design yourself, so budget for that.

What it pays

$70–80 per hour, Mercor's published band. That is the same band as the sister Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Expert listings posted alongside it, so the discipline does not change the rate. Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Eurocode and ISO experience counts equally with US codes
  • Remote and on your own schedule
  • Weekly payment terms published in the ad
  • The work draws directly on judgment you already use

Less good:

  • The ad gives no weekly hours or project length
  • Projects can be extended, shortened or ended early depending on need and performance
  • H-1B and STEM OPT holders are excluded
  • Independent contractor: no benefits, and you handle your own tax
  • The end client is not named
