Skills
  • dermatology
  • medical image review
  • image annotation
  • clinical guidelines
  • medical terminology
  • model evaluation

What you'll do

You review high-resolution clinical images of skin lesions and identify the conditions in them, describe them with the key medical attributes (lesion colour, shape, morphology, distribution), and assess skin health, severity or progression from the image. Then you judge how well AI-generated assessments of the same images hold up clinically.

The work that outlasts any single batch is the written criteria: defining what a high-quality dermatological assessment of an image actually looks like, and providing the clinical insight that improves how a model classifies presentations.

The ad is explicit that this is non-clinical with no direct patient care, which removes the liability that attaches to diagnosis, but it also removes the history, the dermoscopy, the palpation and the follow-up. Reading dermatology from a photograph alone is a narrower instrument than your clinic is, and the project is asking you to work inside that constraint deliberately. Some dermatologists find that a clean, interesting problem and others find it uncomfortable.

What you need

  • A medical degree (MD) with an active, unrestricted US medical licence
  • A minimum of five years post-residency clinical dermatology experience, practising or previously practising
  • A strong ability to identify and describe dermatological conditions in precise medical terminology
  • English fluency
  • Prior experience with image annotation or medical education is preferred rather than required

What it pays

$270 per hour, published as a flat figure rather than a band. That is the highest single hourly rate currently on this board, and a flat rate means none of the usual guesswork about where in a range you land or what evidence moves you up it.

What the ad does not publish is any weekly hours expectation, a project duration or a compensation structure beyond the hourly figure. Payment is weekly via Stripe or Wise, and you are engaged as an independent contractor.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • $270/hour flat, with no band to be placed at the bottom of
  • Non-clinical: no patient care, no call, no documentation burden of your own
  • Remote and on your own schedule, which fits around a practice or a reduced-clinic phase
  • "Practising or previously practised" is stated, so dermatologists who have stepped away from clinic still qualify
  • Writing the assessment criteria is durable intellectual work
  • Weekly payment via Stripe or Wise, published upfront

Less good:

  • Image-only assessment, without history, dermoscopy or follow-up, is a narrower read than clinical practice and some of your judgement will have nowhere to go
  • No weekly hours or project duration published, so treat this as variable rather than replacement income
  • Projects can be extended, shortened or concluded early depending on need and performance
  • The partner is described only as "a leading global partner", so you cannot know whose product your reads shape
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits, no notice period, your own tax to set aside
  • H-1B and STEM OPT candidates cannot be supported
  • Criteria you write may end up governing model behaviour in clinical settings you never see and cannot audit

About this listing

Posted by Mercor on behalf of an unnamed global healthcare partner, restricted to the United States, confirmed open on 12 September 2026. The flat $270 rate, the five-year post-residency floor, the active unrestricted licence requirement and the non-clinical framing are all the ad's own published text.

No weekly hours, project duration or closing date is published. Mercor also states that the work will not involve access to confidential or proprietary information from any employer, client or institution: your own patient images and records are out of scope. Payment and onboarding run at the platform level. See Mercor.
