What you'll do

The German entry in Mercor's set of language-and-literature evaluation roles leans more literary than its siblings. The ad asks for literary editing or criticism experience and an ear for genre and tone, not just correct grammar. The day-to-day:

  • Judge LLM-generated German across uses such as translation, summarization, dialogue and grammar correction
  • Edit or fully rewrite German output until it meets linguistic, cultural and literary standards
  • Annotate German text for grammatical, syntactic, semantic and stylistic features
  • Pinpoint where the model goes wrong and work with AI researchers on fixing it
  • Write detailed literary and linguistic feedback that feeds into training and evaluation

One oddity: the ad's opening paragraph says the project evaluates the model on French-language tasks, while every responsibility and requirement is about German. That looks like a copy error, but confirm the working language during screening.

Who fits

  • Native or near-native German with excellent command of grammar, syntax and style
  • Professional experience in literary editing, copywriting, criticism, or NLP-related linguistic annotation in German
  • A strong sense of literary complexity, tone, genre conventions and regional variation (Austrian and Swiss German usage count here)
  • A sharp eye for mistranslation and unnatural phrasing
  • Strong written communication and experience on remote teams

Interest in AI or translation technology is preferred but not required.

What it pays

$50 per hour, the same flat rate as the English and Spanish versions of this role. No weekly hours or duration are stated. Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise; Mercor cannot support H-1B or STEM OPT candidates.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Values literary and editorial experience, not only linguistics degrees
  • A clear, single rate
  • No country restriction stated

Less good:

  • The French reference in the ad leaves the scope slightly uncertain
  • No hours, volume or duration given
  • Independent contractor; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
