What you'll do

English is the language AI models are strongest in, which changes what this job is about. The model rarely makes beginner mistakes, so the value you add is in the subtler failures: ambiguity, tone that is slightly off for the context, reasoning that reads fluently but does not hold together, phrasing that is correct yet unnatural. Mercor's ad for the English version adds reasoning and rewriting to the task list, which the other language versions do not mention.

The work, per the ad:

  • Evaluate LLM-generated English across summarization, dialogue, grammar correction, rewriting and reasoning
  • Edit or rewrite the output to high linguistic, stylistic and cultural standards
  • Annotate text for grammatical, syntactic, semantic and stylistic features
  • Identify errors, inconsistencies and gaps, and feed them back to improve the model
  • Write detailed linguistic analysis to guide ongoing training

Who fits

  • Native or near-native English with excellent grammar, syntax, vocabulary and style
  • Professional experience in editing, proofreading, writing, linguistic annotation, language evaluation or NLP data work
  • Awareness of regional variation, tone and register
  • The ability to catch subtle grammatical slips, awkward phrasing and ambiguity
  • Analytical judgment, strong written communication, and comfort working independently and remotely

Interest in AI is preferred but not required. The accepted backgrounds are broad enough that an experienced copy editor or proofreader qualifies without any linguistics training.

What it pays

$50 per hour, the same as the German and Spanish versions. The ad describes flexible, asynchronous hours but gives no weekly volume or duration. Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise; Mercor cannot support H-1B or STEM OPT candidates.

Because English is the most widely spoken language in this family, expect the most competition for places.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Broad range of qualifying backgrounds: editing, proofreading, writing or annotation
  • Fully remote and asynchronous
  • No country restriction stated

Less good:

  • Likely heavy competition from a large pool of English editors
  • No hours or project length given
  • Independent contractor; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
