Skills
  • german
  • audio transcription
  • linguistic annotation
  • quality assurance
  • metadata tagging

What you'll do

You listen to German audio and write it down faithfully, keeping the original meaning, tone and context rather than tidying speech into something it was not. Then you edit against the project's linguistic and style guidelines and add structured annotations: who is speaking, when, and any context cues the specification asks for.

Quality assurance is part of the role, not a separate team: you run checks on transcripts for accuracy and consistency, raise ambiguous passages with stakeholders, and suggest improvements to the guidelines themselves. Project data is confidential and handled under compliance rules.

German transcription has its own judgement calls worth being ready for: how to render dialect or Swiss German speech in standard orthography, compound words a speaker coins on the fly, and English loanwords mid-sentence. The ad does not say which varieties the audio covers.

Who fits

  • Native-level German, with strong comprehension of speech and writing
  • Demonstrable transcription, linguistics or other language-focused work experience
  • Meticulous attention to detail and clear communication
  • Comfort with audio playback and transcription tools and standard office software
  • Precise application of written guidelines
  • Organised, proactive problem-solving when working remotely

Familiarity with linguistic annotation and metadata is a plus. No AI experience is required. The ad does not state an English level.

What it pays

$20–36/hour, micro1's published band. That is the same as the French, Hindi, Italian, Japanese and Korean Language Expert roles posted the same week.

It is also worth comparing with micro1's older German Transcription Expert listing, which describes an almost word-for-word identical scope of work at $10–22/hour. If you qualify for both, this one pays more at both ends of the band. The only differences in the published requirements are small: this one asks for strong comprehension of spoken and written German, while the older one asks for knowledge of regional dialects.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • The better-paid of micro1's two German transcription listings
  • Structured annotation work alongside the typing
  • 15 openings on a recent listing
  • Remote, with no country restriction on the listing

Less good:

  • A $20 floor with no published basis for placement in the band
  • Transcription and QA experience expected
  • German varieties in scope are not stated
  • No hours, duration or start date published
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage

About this listing

Posted by micro1 on its own jobs portal about six days before we confirmed it open on 24 September 2026. The $20–36/hour band, 15 openings and the qualifications above are its published text. The ad's own text calls the role "German Transcription Experts" in its opening line. The customer is not named. See micro1.
