What you'll do
The work is German audio transcription with annotation layered on top. You transcribe faithfully to meaning, tone and context, edit to the project's guidelines, tag speaker identity, timestamps and context cues, and run quality checks on the result. Ambiguous passages go back to stakeholders; improvements to the process go into your feedback. Data is confidential and handled under compliance rules.
What distinguishes this listing in its requirements is dialect. It asks for "clear understanding of regional dialects and variations", which points to audio from across the German-speaking area rather than broadcast Hochdeutsch. If you can follow Bavarian, Swabian, Austrian or Swiss German speech and render it consistently, that is the skill being tested.
Who fits
- Native-level German with a clear grasp of regional dialects
- Demonstrable transcription, linguistics or language-focused experience
- Meticulous attention to detail and clear written and spoken communication
- Confidence with audio playback and transcription tools and standard office software
- Precise application of written guidelines, and organised remote working
Linguistic annotation and metadata experience is a plus. No AI experience is required, and the ad states no English level.
What it pays
$10–22/hour, micro1's published band. Read it alongside micro1's German Language Expert listing, posted more recently, which carries a near-identical scope of work at $20–36/hour. The top of this band is only $2 above the floor of that one. If you meet the requirements of both, the other listing is the better-paid route in; this one may suit you if your strength is dialect comprehension specifically.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Dialect knowledge is valued explicitly, which is not true of most transcription work
- Low barrier: no AI experience or English level required
- Remote, with no country restriction on the listing
Less good:
- A $10 floor is low for skilled transcription in a high-cost-of-living language market
- A near-identical, better-paid German listing exists on the same board
- Only ten openings
- No hours, duration or start date published
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
